    Ahoy New Turners

Just a quick heads up. GMC Publications who produce Woodturning magazine have a deal on the Keith Rowley book, Woodturning: A Foundation Course (with DVD) for £13.99 + P&P. Quote code R4842 at the checkout.

    I managed another turn

I managed to do another small turning. Again though, nothing spectacular - just a pen. The blank came from a mixed bag I got at Brodies near Dunkeld. There were around 20 blanks in the bag of various species. So far I have identified zebrano, purpleheart, and elm. (because those were labelled) I...

    Vintage advert for lathe maintenance

Ooooohh, err missus! I bet this helped them dump a load of it in 1964  I'm going to laminate this and hang it up in the shed

    I did a turn!

It's not finished, but I made a niddy noddy. Nothing too taxing, nor too big. It felt good, but I am in absolute agony now. No foties yet either because I forgot to take my camera down to the shed. Golly it felt good at the time. :D Update! Took a fotie.

    I am shocked!

    How can this be?

    Cheapskate Salvaging

Being an IT type bod in my other life, as well as being a tight fisted old git, I tend to allow both lives to merge. Old broken circuit board is used instead of formica to burn rings etc. and I plunder old hard disks for their magnetic bounty booty. So, question. How do others work their "real"...

    More firewood

The daughter and her partner were out for a drive last week, and happened upon a roadside stand selling bags of seasoned firewood, 3 for a tenner. The bags consisted mainly of beech, with some oak, and at least one piece of birch. This piece of oak certainly looks (to me) too good to be used in...

    "Clone" lathes

Looking at the vast number of very similar lathes on the market with the same variable speed control as the Axminster AWVSL1000, I'm wondering why there is such a vast pricing disparity. Draper, Clarke, Fox, Delta, to name a few - all seem to manufacture a very similar range of lathes. Is...

    First since mid-August

I'll be brief(ish), because I don't want to ruffle any feathers with my self centred bleating. Some folks are already aware of all of this, but here goes....... I had my first time behind the lathe since August 15th at the weekend. I can be specific about the date, because the very next day our...

The Scottish Woodworking Show at Brodies Timber

Anyone going to this event? I was really disappointed when the Ingliston show was cancelled, and had already booked the time off work. As per, if you're there on Friday, look out for a little fat bloke with a shaved head looking bewildered. Most likely wearing a Subaru rally team jacket if it's...

    Sick elm

We have a mature (approx 40 year old) elm in the garden, which shows no sign of dutch elm disease. The local tree officer thinks it may be some hybrid planted for testing purposes, but there are no records of it on their systems. It appears to have developed heart rot, which has affected about a...

    Disaster strikes!

My May challenge piece is in serious jeopardy. I have the turning 90% done, but a part of it has broken somehow. I am absolutely gutted, and can't make one. Obviously don't want to give the game away, but it's pretty much useless without this bit. I will have to do my best with superglue, but it...

Another one of those cost questions

I know this is a "how long is a bit of string" type questions but...... I have been asked to make a set of chinese style noodle bowls. Apart from the cost of the timber, I have no idea what I should charge for my time. As y'all know I do this turning malarkey for a hobby rather than for a...

    Farewell old friend

My Myford ML8 has gone to pastures new. Another novice turner with zero budget. Some of you may know I got my lathe via the freecycle network. I put up a wanted ad, under the premise "no cheek no chance," and got a reply within hours of it being published. When I decided to upgrade, I thought...

    Zero output

I did absolutely no turning at the weekend. I had to replace a CV joint on the car, so that was Friday taken care of. Saturday was just too nice, so relaxed in the sun with a few beers and played with the dog. Sunday, cut the grass, then sat in the sun with a few beers and played with the dog...

    Interesting for noobs like me

I've seen a few of Richard's videos, but this is particularly interesting to me because it describes the mechanics of catches. Apologies if y'all have already seen it. http://youtu.be/jOvF5f1phhY

    Craft fairs

There was a craft fair at work yesterday and one of the stalls was a disabled turner and his missus. I stupidly forgot to ask his name. Some beautiful work on the stall too, which being mostly confined to a 'chair must be pretty awkward at times. Anyhoo.... the point of this ramble...

    Tooth Fairy Bell

You know how it is..... The kids' teeth start to fall out, so you wait for the tooth fairy to do his/her stuff. The kids panic because they think the tooth fairy wont be able to find them. Then they panic that the 5p coin the tooth fairy leaves in place of the tooth will get lost. (and sometimes...

    Turning laburnum

I picked up a few small laburnum logs yesterday. All about 18" long and around 2"-3" in diameter. I read somewhere that laburnum becomes very brittle when dry and as such is better to turn green. I want to make some lamps from this, so would I be better to turn them green and try to dry it...

    A rustic fruit bowl

Yesterday, I finally plucked up the courage to mount that lump of elm on the lathe. I was a bit scared in case I wrecked it completely. It was a big old lump of timber, and I was worried in case I ended up with little more than a spinning top. It gave me a fair workout right through. I also got...
