Iron swap in A Lie Nielsen No3

I'm sure this will have come up before but couldn't find reference. My LN No3 still has the original A2 in it and I want to swap to an O1. I emailed Ron Hock as I have one of his in my LN No62 (and it is mighty fine, but don't think he does them any more). He doesn't do irons for LNs now - I...

    Adirondak chairs - timber choice

I believe the traditional choice is / was Northern / Canadian red cedar - but I expect that was partly because that's where they were. Here in the UK, I've considered Euro oak, Siberian larch, maybe a good grade redwood. Any ideas please?

    Andy T's block plane

This one's for Andy. A few years ago he gave me a small woodie block plane I had been admiring. I put a hefty camber on the iron to make it a small scrub. Used in ernest yesterday to put a big chamfer on the underside of a coffee table. Smaller plane in foreground, set with a healthy appetite...

    Luban butt chisels - recommended

Just got a set of 4 from eBay... what a find !! Beautifully made, however close you look into all the details these are really excellent. Bubinga handles suggests new old stock as Luban now use cherry I believe and anyway bubinga is outlawed. Feel is excellent too, proper butt chisel sizes (not...

    Wetstone grinders

Had a Tormek 8" for a long time then passed it on to a friend as I got a bit obsessive regarding water in the workshop - I like hyper-dry in there. Since then I sometimes visit said friend partly to make use of the Tormek... tells me something. QUESTION: In the past few years several Tormek...

In praise of the 2-part cap.

Just a quick observation and only my views of course, although I will support those views with reasoning etc. Here we can share practical experiences. There's been chat here lately about getting the cap iron down close, and elsewhere it has been an active topic for a while. I just re-tuned an...

    Coronet start-up

Hi all, I have an old green Coronet lathe and it is excellent for the work I do. But I am a bit concerned that there is no soft-start and when on high speed setting (normal for me as I do spindle work mostly) the kick on start-up puts a big load on the drive train, especially the take-up pulley...

    fan heater recommend

Just got one of these and very pleased with it. About 3 times the price of the cheap plastic ones at £25 - but metal casing, dead basic, really well built, quiet and amazingly compact. No frills at all - 2kW, 2 switches (so 1 or 2 kW), no thermostat (eBay copy implies there is but it's a safety...

    Record 0 vice jaws

Please does anyone know if new jaws are available anywhere. Mine are in a bad way - I know I could face them or make some but shiny new ones with the milled faces would be nice, and way quicker! It's like this (this one isn't mine): edit i did find someone on eBay doing sizes 1 upward, but...

    filing ideas

Not filing, that would be under metalworking. Filing. One of my 2 favourite workshop storage tricks. The other is a French cleat all the way round the workshop walls. These office/commercial units are cheap and plentiful - and the office ones are normally quite solid. Some smaller machines are...

    spindle mounting question

Good day turners! Advice please: when I turn T-bars for vices I get to a point where I need to mount one finished end in tailstock in order to match the other end. It's made with one end separate - 10mm hole in end and matching spigot on shaft. But to have that joint invisible I would then...

    The Hemingway workbench

I don't usually give things names, but there is a clear reason for this one, and I've come to like it. I had decided I had a justifiable need for a new bench. It was going to be quite a change from my current (now sold) one which was an 8 foot very heavy beast with big double-screw face and...

    Simon James holdfasts

Not sure how many of us are aware of these holdfasts, but Simon sent me a pair to try / test a few weeks ago. I'll own up to being a very big fan of traditional holdfasts (forge-bent steel, 3/4 hole, one hammer, that's it) - so I was keen to try them. I think Simon has done a fair bit of tuning...

    anyone seen my 6" rule??

I've lost it, my favourite. It was an old Rabone, nice thick steel and metric one side. I have a Moore & Wright - too thin and flimsy. I have a Fischer - too narrow, too thin, and flimsy I have a 100mm out of a Christmas cracker - best of the three by far. Does anyone know of the existence of a...

    kinks in handsaws?

Every so often I buy a few cheap handsaws. One recent arrival is this one, but it has slight kinks in it. I have taken best pic I can manage, they are slight: Question is, is there a reliable technique to remove the kinks? Here's the saw, nothing too special steel back... just a nice size and...

    Sparks No70 at work

Just needed to share this. An oak top with the inevitable reversals therein, plus the solid block endgrain motif in the centre. Had the No 70 set for a fair cut too, a decent bite. That plane is really very good =D>

    American board sizing

Just so I know... can someone explain the way US workers talk about (for example) : "I made test cuts in a 8/4 air-dried walnut board" for example. What do these fractional-looking board sizes mean?

    plane adjusting hammers

I have some nice hex and round stock of brass, bronze and gunmetal. I want to make a new plane hammer some time. I currently use a lignum one I made but could do with a bit more mass. On my travels I've seen many variants in use - I know without doubt mine will have a short shaft (maybe...

    Calling North Yorkshire

Is there anyone in the vicinity of Thirsk / Kirbymoorside / Helmsley who would kindly collect and hold a small thing for me if I happen to win the auction. I get up to Ripon fairly often so would collect within a reasonable time. Excuse me asking but it's either this or some relatives and I...

    a chuck question

I am a very proud owner of a shiny Startrite Mercury, and it has Jacobs keyed chuck on it. I asked elsewhere here about fitting a keyless chuck, then remembered I have a rather nice Albrecht keyless in a box (came with the Myford). Here they are side by side I might be in luck here, but need...
