Veritas marking gauge looses its setting

I have the mortise gauge version of this marking gauge. I was given it as a present. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth they say. Even if it falters. And yes I too have to use it under advisement as it has slipped along the shaft since it came out of the box. It may be slipping quietly to...

    Bandsaw Recommendation for Wood Ripping

I used a half inch blade on my INCA saw and ripped 15 centimetre thick stock. You do not need a beast of a saw just a well balanced one, the correct tooth saw that has been welded correctly and patience. It is slower that a circular saw yes. But it is so much safer to use. No kickback issues.

    Bandsaw Recommendation for Wood Ripping

If you do not have money for a new saw. You could look for a second hand INCA or Kitty. Both no longer made- but so well made - that they will do exactly what you need. My first secondhand bandsaw was an Electra Beckum, terrible saw. I then picked up an INCA for 150 Euro but it needed a...

    Customs declarations and brexit

I hope that freedom returns one day for you and future generations, living in the UK and EU, knowing and working with your neighbours (countries) enriches everyone involved. Deploying resources and labour where they are needed most makes the world the better place and increases everyone's...

    Large Forstner bits (55mm plus)

A German or Swiss forstner bit that size with set you back in excess of 100 quid. If you are going to be using it a lot (weekly for years) they are your best bet. However if it is for hobby or incidental use it might be worth trying a carbide tip model ordered direct from China. I have compared...

Drum Sander diy pre build question.

I built a drum sander without a power feed and I discovered it is a tricky machine to use without a power feed. You need to take lots of passes with only a minimal amount of pressure on the timber you are sanding or it will leave ridges. A power feed is a luxury but perhaps a really useful one.

    Beginner to Scrolling- Opinions please

A second hand Hegner is definitely a good choice. They are over engineered so they go on for ever too and if you ever come to sell you will get a good price for it. Cheaper machines tend to be worth next to nothing second hand. Are you using a fretsaw at the moment? A quality fretsaw is fast and...

    Bandsaw Blades

Same here. I have a dwindling stock of Tuffsaw blades. Hopefully the Brexit rules will get ironed out before I run out.

    Rasps and files

I have a range of TOME FETEIRA rasps and files and even though they are obviously less refined that a hand stitched rasp they are excellent for most jobs. Many secondhand rasps are just too dull.

    Crown tools?

I bought a crown sliding bevel a few years ago. Very inexpensive and really good quality. It was so cheap I nearly didn't buy it. It would seem not everything needs to break the bank.

    Baffled by bandsaw

I forgot to mention that if the blade is blunt it will misbehave terribly as will a badly welded blade and you need a 3 or 4 teeth per inch blade for resawing anything over 3 cm thick so definitely for a piece 15cm thick. More teeth per inch will not clear out enoug of the sawdust and will cause...

    Baffled by bandsaw

A bandsaw is the best tool for resawing, it is safe and accurate once you understand how you need to interact with it. But it is a tricky tool for resawing in a shared workshop. If the previous user has been cutting curves, putting the blade through its paces, it will always be difficult to...

    Piher Corpus clamps

I am based in the Netherlands so I bought the clamps from a local supplier. So I cannot recommend anyone specifically. There must be a few people selling them in the UK. I have been using them for several weeks now and I am considering selling all my other cheaper clamps and replacing them...

    Scraper Plane No80

I bought a new one too. And it has always done the job perfectly. I still use the more basic scrapers for smaller work but for larger areas the stanley scraper plane is excellent.

    Combination Square Advice Please

I got ones of these in March. Best quality sliding square I have ever owned. A PEC Cosmetic Second 150 mm / 6" E/M Double Square 1/32, 1/64, mm and .5mm The reason these are seconds is because there is some pitting on the surface of the casting. You need a magnifying glass to find it. It does...
