    Mask Hygiene

Some one showed a mask that had been left without dissasembly and cleaning on here ages ago. There was mold growth behind the cartridges near the diaphragms. Not good, I used to wide mine out with antibac wipes.

Jones and Shipman 540P Rebuild (Round 2)

I quite like cleaning parts, I find it cathartic. A proper parts washer would be nice though

    Powered Respirators

Early on I messed about with making my own mask, but instead of having a unit that filtered on my person. I had a pump that took fresh air from a clean source and fed a mask via a flexible pipe. I bizarrely used a miliatary fan that came off a cold war radar unit. It worked really well. Only...

    Powered Respirators

The P3 in the half mask offers more protection irrespective of the P2 being powered, the thing is the half mask relies on the user moving the air whereas the powered one the air is being delivered by the fan. If you've ever used a mask that seals on your face for hours you will agree its not...

    Powered Respirators

Its worth checking what protection you will be getting, some of the 'cheaper' models only have P2 filters. I've used the 3M dustmaster then the versaflo now I have the 6000 version of the versaflo which can take carbon filters for spraying. The older versaflos come up regularly and prices are...

    Wadkin RS tool rests

Not 100% but I heard the hole at the bottom was for holding a referance template or picture. RS's are the favourite of production turners.

    Spindle Wobble - Charnwood W812

If you have a dial gauge put it on the register of the spindle, the bit that has no threads. If you get no runout then its not the spindle. If when you put the chuck on you get runout on the body of the chuck then its the chuck been machined wrong. That drive looks a bit battered, if you can...

Trying to help my retired joiner dad

Pretty much covered everything in the comments. The saw bench, spindle moulder and planer will make half decent money. Find the tags and check what each model sell for on ebay advanced. The planer looks like an RZ which are worth a decent amount £1500. AGS's sell well. Machine dealers will...

Acceptable tolerance for thicknesser - parallelism of cutter head to the bed

Wadkin were the first company to automate woodworking machines by the use of punched card control, and by the 70's were creating machines with early cnc. By the mid 80's the company was being asset stripped by every owner that came around.

    Help MT2 stuck

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago whilst rebuilding a wadkin LQ which has a morse taper 2. I tried everything for 3 weeks. In the end I took it to a machinists place and they put it in the lathe and cut it out. They said it was still stuck until the last 1/2mm. I've did manage to...

    Advice on spindle moulder purchase

Dont be put off by an EQ being too far away to check it out. Ask for a video of it running up and down. You can tell alot from just that. If it has had grease nipples put on then dont touch it. Like already said they run oil mist system. But then again EQ's can sometimes go for very little money...

    Dangerous Pallets?

I worked at chep (blue pallets) for 20 years, they do not treat any of their pallets, all they do is paint with water based paint. I've seen some blue pallets with HT, heat treated on them. The timber they use comes from latvia. Chep dont sell pallets, they just hire them so when you see stray...

    Wadkin RU lathe restoration

All of my machines are for 'hobby' purposes, I very occasionally do a bit for friends in the trade, like matching some skirting on the spindle moulder.

    SCM Super Router Refurbishment

Does it run at the high speeds like an LS? I'd be cautious about bearing change, maybe ask SCM if their was a running in routine. Wadkin would have a specific method of running in new bearings which took 16hrs of testing.

    Wadkin RU lathe restoration

That bit john repaired attaches to the bed and houses 2 gears, one goes to a handle which is wound by the operator, the other is on the end of a long screw which goes through a threaded plate attached to the headstock. I reckon the whole lathe would have to be well levelled for it to work easily.

    Wadkin RU lathe restoration

I've always fancied doing one of those huge hollow forms, I know a guy called vince manna in Oz who made them big enough to fit a person.

    Wadkin RU lathe restoration

Thanks Richard, I like wadkin because in my mind they were just about the best. Robinson were superior in a few machines but no one had such a range of machines. My preference is for the older stuff. I think they lost there way in the 60's. Adam they certainly have a decent capacity, this one...
