FTAGH Axminster M950 needs a new home FREE

Having given up turning five or six years ago I’ve been keeping this lathe for my niece but I now want to pass on the lathe a a stack of large blocks of mainly sycamore to a deserving new home. The lathe has no base as I mounted it on a sturdy bench nor does it come with a chuck or any tools...

    Axminster Tools Problem

Having been a happy Axminster customer for over twenty years I am now far from happy. I recently ordered a new bench grinder which when it arrived was obviously not new with scratches and dents etc. A return was arranged as I would have to wait for a replacement as (surprise, surprise) they...

    Poor Service From Axminster

For the first time in many years of dealing with Axminster I am far from happy with my latest experience. Having done all the Christmas spending and still with a few bob left I decided to treat myself to a new Lie Nielsen chisel. On their website some sizes were listed as being out of stock so...

    Looking for Peter Dean

Just thought there might be a chance that someone on this forum may have come across Pete who was a very good friend and a highly skilled cabinet maker and wood turner. Many years ago he taught in St. Neots and lectured in Bedford. It would be great to get in touch again.

    Carbide Cutter

I have just taken delivery of one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Square-Carbid ... 0586608089 and what a great cutter it is whether it is used for roughing or hollowing it is like the proverbial hot knife through butter even on hard oak and what a great price. I now need to find a similar...

    Roughing gouge profile

I just bought a very nice Sorby 19mm roughing gouge for £10 on ebay, when it arrived I was amazed to find a really long fingernail grind on it, surely the norm would be a straight grind. Apart from the grind it had hardly been used so still a good buy even though I lost well over an inch in...

    Oh Dear!

Today had started so well with the first dry day for ages and more promised, then a good result for the Welsh in the rugby things couldn't get much better. Some time ago I started a thread about drying some sycamore I had been given and thought that today would be a good time to try some out...

    Home Made Hollowing Tool

Just thought I'd have a go at making a cutting tool of my own - a simple steel bar tapered and rounded at the end with a threaded hole to carry tips like the sorby multi-tip etc. My question is what type of steel is best to use for the bar it will be 15mm diameter about 600mm long so do I use...

    Electric Chainsaw

Just a quick heads up for anyone after one of these. I just bought a new 16" Oleo-Mac from Mow Direct for £99.95 with free next day delivery. It's first job was a 12" square block of semi green sycamore which it had no problem with at all. Nice saw for cutting blanks at a really great price.

    Lignum Vitae Mallet

Like many before me, I have just finished making a carvers mallet from a lignum vitae bowl. The trouble is I cannot bring myself to use such a nice piece of wood for it's usual purpose - thank goodness I am not a carver. How do the rest of you manage?

    Turning blanks

What is the normal practice in highly reputable shops where turning blanks are concerned is it totally caveat emptor or should I take a badly split one back?

    New Chuck

I have recently got an Axminster M900 and need to buy a chuck for it. After reading many reviews I had decided to get the Axminster K10 or Axminster Super Precision but on further reading it was suggested that the super precision might be too heavy for my lathe. Other possibilities seem to be...

    Freshly Cut Sycamore

Being a complete novice who has only ever used dry blanks I am in need of some advice. I have acquired a sycamore trunk roughly 250cm x 30cm and as I am collecting it on Sunday need to know what is the best size to cut it to for storage. I would like to try turning some green so any advice for...

Hi to everyone and new lathe question

I'll start by introducing myself being new. Hi everyone I'm Chris and started woodworking when I retired a few years back, I mainly make small furniture but rapidly running out of space so have decided to go back to my woodturning which I gave up some 30 years ago. Now to the question, my old...
