    Chainsaw?

We have Stihl MS660 with 30" bar for our Alaskan Mill. It's all we've ever used so I can't comment on other saws in the mill, but personally I wouldn't want to go for anything smaller as this occasionally struggles in the wider logs we cut. For smaller logs it works really well. Go for a bigger...

    Bowl gouge. Deep flute

I'm intrigued - could you please post a photo of the old gouge you have?

    Bowl gouge. Deep flute

As far as I know, all modern bowl gouges are made from round bar for strength. Some may have a more U shaped profile compared to the more common V but they're all round bar

    De-barking a burr/burl?

The regular way to do it is with a power washer. Failing that - do it mechanically, which is a pain. Wire brush in a drill works but leaves score marks on the burr surface (which can be an interesting feature).

Quality Chainsaws - Husqvarna & Stihl the only options?

We tend to use Stihl at work but have a couple of old Huskys as well. I've always preferred the Stihls but that's probably just what I'm used to as that's what I was trained on. And I have an MS180 at home. My boss prefers the Husky's but, again, probably just through habit. The recent Stihls at...

    Pricing

How much was the blank (or if you got it for free how much would the blank have cost)? how long did you spend on it - look how much uk minimum wage is and charge more than that? what materials did you use to finish it? See what that all adds up to, compare to other sellers in your area and...

    Tailstock in the way...

At demos I'm always surprised that none of the turners rotate the headstock and turn with it rotated off the bed even when the lathe has the capability (for demos you could realign the whole lathe to enable the audience to see if you wanted the headstock rotated). Turning with a rotated...

Robert Sorby - Excellent Customer Services

When the platform is in place the bolt is screwed in. When I remove the table I'm lazy and don't re-insert the bolt in the frame (I'll only have to take it out again to re-install the table!)

    Dream lathe

Lots of people seem to want really big lathes. I'm sure thy're great, but I already end up with a house full of turnings and storage issues. My Wivamac 6000 does just fine. What I need is a bigger shed and house!

Robert Sorby - Excellent Customer Services

Good to see that I'm not the only one who has lost the platform locking lever. Whilst it's useful it's too easy to loose and could do with being fastened onto the bolt somehow - haven't seen mine for months now. I get by with the bolt just finger tight. And I've now added a magnet under the...

I want a new bowl gouge

Thanks for saving me the time needed to hunt out the photo took Chas. Yes, that's the Axminster Perform 'bowl' gouge which I have and it is fairly useless as a bowl gouge compared to one with a deeper flute with either a traditional or swept back grind. I haven't checked the gouge in store, but...

I want a new bowl gouge

That could just be down to a poor quality Axminster gouge. I started out with their set and the bowl gouge was pretty poor (mainly in the shape, being more of a spindle gouge profile).

How would you seal these wood blanks?!

I generally rough turn the outisde and inside to approx a wall thickness of 10% the diameter and then tightly wrap clingfilm or pallet wrap (by preference because it tends to be a bit thicker and stronger) around it. Put enough layers of wrap so that you can make a hole in the middle to let...

    Noob chainsaw advice?

Out of interest - what saw are you using? Presumably a Stihl 880 or equivalent with a monster bar on it.

    Noob chainsaw advice?

Our origianl ripping chain was ground to 10 degrees and worked pretty well. I recently got some Rotatech replacements and they only do regular 30 degree chains. The plan was to bring them down to 10 degrees as we sharpened them (by hand unfortunately). However, they seem rip pretty well at 30...

    Noob chainsaw advice?

To counter the problem of stale fuel you can use alkylate fuel such as Aspen or Stihls version. It's certainly more expensive than regular unleaded with 2 stroke oil added but the benefits: 1) the fuel doesn't go off - I had some in my small Stihl for well over a year without a problem, 2) it...
