    Tail centre - how tight?

So as some may know I've managed to break two revolving centres in a few months, the first time I contacted the manufacturer and they sent out a free replacement, then last week I managed to break that one, it seems there is a weak point at the break site as both broke at the exact same point, I...

    My heart is broken

It is with great sadness that this evening we have had to say farewell to our much beloved springer spaniel Mya, we have known her since birth and owned her from 8 weeks, on May13th she turned 15, my partner is beyond heartbroken, we don't have children so our dogs have filled that void, the 2...

    What's the difference...

What's the difference between PVA wood glue and PVA glue? Obviously they are both PVA but does the stuff advertised as wood glue have extra contents? I ask because working in a primary school provides access to all the PVA I could need if it is of use.

    5minute epoxy

So I've cut up some boards from a condemned P.E bench ready to glue up to make some bowl blanks, I need to sand off the varnish first but would the 5minute epoxy I have from poundland be strong enough to withstand being turned? I'll take some pics of the boards tomorrow, they're a little cupped...

    Hobby websites

I thought I'd start this thread for everyone to share their favourite websites they use for their hobbies, I have 3 to start things off, one you probably know about and two that are not so well known, my other big hobby is pepakura/papercraft, particularly animals which I like to make and hide...

    Feeling very violated today

So, some may know and some may not know that I am a school caretaker that lives on site, on Sunday evening around 18:30 the school alarm sounded, the app on my phone indicated that it was from one of our yr6 classrooms, I grabbed my keys and went over to the yr5 and 6 building and into the...

Robert Sorby 447 deluxe jig set

So, as its a big milestone coming up (my 40th 😳) mum decided to buy me the RS 447 deluxe jig set despite my objections, I've been waiting for Yandles to have it in stock as they sell it for £110 as apposed to everywhere else I've seen its £150+ but she wouldn't listen and ordered it while we...

    Maker space rejig

So as I was feeling fully recovered after my hospital stay I decided to go out and continue having a tidy up of my little maker space. This is how we left it after I'd sold one of my bikes and we sorted through some bags and boxes, the white shelves used to be on the floor and the unit under it...

    Mesmerising

Anyone else find fire very hypnotic to look at? Having a bit of a late night burn up after tidying up the garden a little and removing a fair few bits from inside and outside of the school boiler room

    Your opinions

So I'm in the process of making a retirement gift for the head teacher at work, ive got a piece of oak that was cut a few years ago, it's been left outside and has some lovely spalting but it's proving to be a PITA to cut, it's round but still very out of balance and some areas are so hard they...

    Oh dear

So today our tree surgeon was on site to deal with a couple of storm damaged trees, one willow and one hornbeam, the hornbeam has beautiful pattern on the cross sections and I can't wait to see how it dries out. I've always got on great with Andy and today we got talking about woodturning...

Apologies in advance but i am currently off my nut on pain relief and about 3 bottles of port. So, since Xmas day I've been suffering with a broken tooth (popcorn is the devils food) a couple days after this the pain started so I began taking a mix of ibuprofen and paracetamol, ive never been...

    Free logs/woodchip

At school we are in the process of setting up an allotment and wildlife space, one of the parents has suggested a website that may be of interest to some of you... https://app.getchipdrop.com/profile/ The site is basically an agent, arborists use them to "dispose" of their waste, once you sign...

    Live centre screw

So yesterday I noticed the bearing retainer at the back of my live centre had come loose, I cleaned the thread off, used a little bit of plumbers tape and screwed it back in, then I noticed the retaining screw for the point was missing, I've spoken to the manufacturer and apparently the screw...

    Flat or chamfered?

So today I was clearing an overgrown corner of the school grounds and found some cast iron bench ends, they're in pretty good condition, no cracks or damage that I can see so thought I would have a go at rebuilding one of them with some 5ft lengths of 2x1 iroko, I don't have enough to make the...

    How thick?

So I've started my next turning and have the outside ready for sanding and finishing before I turn it over and hollow it, is there a general rule for how thick the walls should be in comparison to the overall size of the bowl? Up to now most of my turnings have been on the small side at around...
