    Handle wood omnibus

All it takes here is wasting money - one of the things where you are that's probably cheap that's on the higher end of the prices here is olivewood, which makes nice smooth handles and turns and polishes nicely. I'd guess the average cost of the handles above is around $3-4 accounting for the...

    Handle wood omnibus

I think there are probably a couple of elms here - not sure of their population, but at least one of them is known as the pizz elm. When you burn it, it smells like urine. We never burned much of that stuff when I was a kid, though - red oak is something that grows large fast in second growth...

    Handle wood omnibus

I'm guessing beech was used because it has some interlocking and it's cheap and smooth, no pores or roughness. But it's a bit light feeling for handles if a chisel user is a handle gripper. The virtue of making handles out of something cheap is if they break, you can just make another one, and...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

Won't be sad to stop hearing about him.

    Invasion of US Capitol building

He's a good interview - just nothing of substance and not real deep on solving problems. He always had his interviews tailored and the questions curated so that he would look good (hillary probably did the same thing). I don't think trump is wise enough to do something like that and it ended up...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

There was just a lack of practical action other than creating a regulatory structure that only really large businesses could navigate. Unfortunately, the new appointees for the incoming administration share a lot in common - animosity toward business, which leads to a whole lot of compliance...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

Wait, there's lots of journalistic info, but all is quoted from his book? All presidents visit injured service members. It's part of the job. Gw bush before Obama was head and shoulders above on this, though, inviting them with him to participate with him in daily routines, like biking and...

    Handle wood omnibus

Thanks, James - they're sort of copies (not exactly, but to some extent) of various chisels I've looted from your tool dealers and ebay.uk. Just my favorite type and the simple handle style that marples called "carver" style is my favorite. Leaving the oxide from quenching on the chisel would...

    Handle wood omnibus

leopardwood - like lacewood but hard (like as hard as the two above, much harder than domestic hardwoods). I dinged up the ferrule on this chisel a little bit not thinking, but it's a chisel for me so it doesn't matter. This is the first chisel I've had luck getting a forge weld on the...

    Handle wood omnibus

chakte viga - like louro preto, something I never used before. But has a wonderful fine texture and feels like boxwood even though it doesn't look like it. I'd go so far as to say it feels nicer than boxwood.

    Handle wood omnibus

Louro Preto (this one may be my favorite, and I found it by accident because a store here told me long ago that this was cocobolo. I knew it wasn't, didn't know what it was and never used it until now - almost 15 years later). almost like rosewood but with the medullary rays of mahogany. About...

    Handle wood omnibus

Not sure if the term omnibus comes up much there, but in the US, it's a term for catch all (often used with spending bills). If you want funding for space toilets next to funding for bridge rivets, it's in the omnibus. I'm embarking on making a bunch of chisels, and still puzzling over a few...

    Gaming

    1. hah! I'm not sure that I've ever known of 2 or 3. Diablo and Ascendancy were two of my favorites (kind of got bored with the dooms and quakes, though I recall quake was probably same time or after diablo 1. went to college right around when doom was introduced and we had in room ethernet...

Won't somebody think of "young people"? (Edit: and No, older people aren't "to blame")

Thinking further about this (outside of covid where it's just used as a crowbar), I'd like to compare things using figures from here (vs. there). In the 1950s and 1960s, a typical house in the US cost about 2x a buyer's salary. I don't know if this was median or mean By the time the last real...

Won't somebody think of "young people"? (Edit: and No, older people aren't "to blame")

In places where property values aren't bonkers here, that's effectively all rent. Rent pays the mortgage and fees and if it didn't, nobody would rent their properties. The high cost of living accommodations is due to increasingly thick layers of building codes, zoning and moratoriums on...

    Persuading a non payer

Probably varies by state here (almost sure it does, except public officials are barred from any right to refuse being recorded in public -that's been painful to get to). Generally, you can record from a public right away, but you'll potentially have trouble if you are recording from a public...

    Persuading a non payer

I've never had to withhold payment, but I've also never used a lowest dollar contractor unless someone I already know ends up being lowest dollar. If someone did a job that didn't meet the terms of agreement, I'd withhold payment and let them take it to court instead. Not my job as a property...

    Gaming

When I was younger, I liked games. Job responsibility would allow. Much greater enjoyment later shooting real guns at not people and not even paper silhouettes of people but rather reloading and trying to get the dots super close together. But, alas, same thing with kids. Need an onsite hobby...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

Separately, I recall my grandmother's generation (she was just a little younger than reagan....and as an FDR depression survivor she HATED reagan), but she collected jokes like reagan, and after you got through the initial pleasantries, she would almost always tell a joke, and then move on to...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump aren't really that much different in terms of personal qualities. I've listened to people talking about Trump (who knew him before he became president). Apparently, he was a combination of (or one or the other) an affable fellow who was a little off, or someone...
