    Gen Z and DiY

To be fair to a person who is a surgeon, a lot of them work very hard, and a lot of hours helping people. They are also well paid. Perhaps he felt that he'd rather just pay somebody to do it for him. It's a matter of time isn't it. By the very nature of this site we're all handy types, but if...

    Henger woes

It looks to be about 31mm in every direction. But the hole in them looks to be 20mm.

    Sharpening for beginners

Well it's one way to check the sharpness I suppose. . .

    Evri....or is it?!

I've stopped buying much on eBay because of the hit or miss nature of delivery. If people stop buying from sellers who use unreliable carriers, then eventually the message might get through. I'm afraid that the rebranding of Evri made no difference at all.

Battery Electricity Storage being built in Scotland

I don't know. It would of course depend on how big and heavy they were, and the rpm. Anything big rotating fast has a scary amount of power stored in it. As apprentices at college we were told about the slam shut valves on the steam turbines in power stations. If the load comes off due to a...

That's a lovely quality job that is.

    Sharpening for beginners

I've got a proper slate razor hone here amongst my various stones. It did still have the remains of the box at one time. Must be more than a century old. As you say, it gives a nice polished edge, but I'm not that keen (ha!). It's a bit slow.

why does a dead button battery still put out full voltage?

That sort of arrangement was fairly common back then. I've never actually measured the voltage, but cranking an engine, particularly a freezing cold one, when the battery isn't at it's best either pulls the voltage right down without the ballast.

why does a dead button battery still put out full voltage?

My dad had an old Ford E93A back in the 60s. A "Sit up and beg" Popular. Like most of his motors it was pretty well gone, and so was the battery. A 6V system. Anyway he used to hand crank it, but even then there wasn't enough juice from the battery for the ignition coil. So he wired two six...

why does a dead button battery still put out full voltage?

Possibly /probably. Try reading the voltages with the battery tester setting and with just DC volts. If the battery tester reads slightly lower then odds on it has a loading resistor built in. The resistor is in parallel with the battery to put a dummy load on it.

    Sharpening for beginners

Pretty well exactly what I use. I think the last lot I knocked up was a thin car oil, thinned out further with paraffin until it looked and felt right. Worked OK. Purists would probably say I have a horrible technique and what I use is wrong, but it works OK for me. I'm a great believer in the...

    Sharpening for beginners

I missed out that I used to strop on a piece of leather drive belt dressed with fine valve grinding paste. Get an edge that will shave hairs off the back of your hand. I generally use a fine-ish diamond stone now, and strop on what's handy, but I don't do as much woodwork these days, and what I...

    Sharpening for beginners

This is the best way IMHO. I made wooden furniture professionally for 20 years or so. Working oak in particular, sharpening is an almost continuous process. Tried a few sharpening systems but always went back to the India Stone that I've had for 50 years, in a box I made with extensions for...

    sore legs from knee pads

Know where I can get some of that voila from? 😊 Seriously though I've been using a kneeling pad from Screwfix. Better than kneepads unless you have to move around a lot I reckon Taping two together's not a bad idea.

    Double garage heating

That's something like the ones we had at work. I don't reckon I need that much power TBH.

    Double garage heating

We had radiant heaters where I worked at one time. They work well if you're in front of them as you say.

Anyone recognise this little pulley block?

Speaking of that place, I've been in some weird and spooky places, often all on my own, but that place takes the biscuit. The front of the house was a large cottage style house that was the original farmhouse, but it has a much grander rear extension with a very large and tall room for...
