Why does my drill press make messy holes?

Forsner bits here, but will try doing it how you said!

Why does my drill press make messy holes?

When drilling an 8mm hole in 18mm hardwood, such as poplar, oak and walnut, it's always messy and sort of split on the other side. I'm using a drill press and new drill bit. Underneath the piece being drilled is a piece of plywood. What am I doing wrong?

How do people make wooden baby rattles?

What would you compress it with, a vice? Put the plug in, then put the piece in a vice? But what's the 'compression fitting?'

How do people make wooden baby rattles?

Anyone know what the 'compression' is referring to? '...use glue and also a compression fitting and then sanded smooth... There is actually no glue that is on the outside of the rattle, what seeps out when we compression fit the plug is wiped off before we finish the rattle.'

How do people make wooden baby rattles?

Cool, so can you drill in as far as you want with these? Then you'd cut them so they don't fill up the space all the way?

How do people make wooden baby rattles?

I don't mean the kind that you make on a lathe and magically the rings appear. I mean the kind where there's a plug, with some beans or lentils or bb's inside and they rattle around. It looks like there's some tool that can drill in and pull out a plug, and then you fill that space with...

Help!! How to put a logo onto a wooden piece?

Thanks for the ideas, I'll google for more detail on the methods. He's ordering 200-300 of them, so it has to be a quick and easy method! I have a Peter Child machine as well, and no way would attempt this logo with it, it's too complicated! And it's for a business conference so has to look...

Help!! How to put a logo onto a wooden piece?

A potential customer wants to order some things from me and wants his logo on them. He mentioned engraving, but alas, I do not have an engraving machine however much I would love one (been looking at the CO2 laser engravers that start at $8,000 - only a dream!) Someone suggested a stamp, and I...

Do I need a palm sander?

Thanks so much Graham and DMF! I'm not in a rush, just realising there might be a better way, but can wait! So a visit to have a sanding session might be a good idea, I'll let you know if I decide to come!

Do I need a palm sander?

I make these and sell them in large quantities, daily, so I can't do it all by hand! I need tools to help me do it quicker! I buy all my wood at a timber yard, planed. But it needs to be sanded because sometimes the planers make marks, or there is dirt, and also it needs some sanding before...

Do I need a palm sander?

Just had a look at the handheld belt sander. The width of the belt is about 70mm and the width of the belts on the 1/3 sanders are 90mm. If I got the belt sander, wouldn't I be in a similar position I am in now, with a too narrow belt sander? Or whatever I get, unless it's huge, I will always...

Do I need a palm sander?

Good idea! Are the sheets velcro'd on or is it that horrible crap that doesn't come off like my disc sander?

Do I need a palm sander?

Oh great. I was also going to ask how easy it is to hold onto a small shape and sand it with this sander. Not so easy I guess? I might buy one and give it a try. If it doesn't work I can bring it back?

Do I need a palm sander?

Thanks! I have vouchers for Argos, do you think this would be just as good? It doesn't say how much of a sheet it is. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... 104985.htm And then I saw orbital sanders. What's the difference??

Do I need a palm sander?

I've never heard of a sheet sander, is it the same as a palm sander but bigger? Does it all refer to the percentage of a sheet? Also, I think I've heard that palm sanders (and I'm supposing sheet sanders too) work in such a motion that they don't leave sanding lines?

Do I need a palm sander?

This is the type of thing I make, and I need to sand the face of them, the flat part, so I can paint and woodburn, and get rid of marks and dirt from the timberyard and their planing machine, etc. Currently I use my 25mm wide sanding belt, which is just getting ridiculous. It's too narrow and...

Do you do your woodworking in rented accommodation?

We live in our own flat and I do my woodworking indoors and on the balcony, and in summer, away from the building by the sheds. We're looking into renting our flat out and renting a house, but I wonder what landlords would think if they knew I was doing woodworking in the house, and also the...

Do you need a lathe to make a ring shape?

Oh, those are totally different from what these people want to buy from me. This is what they want: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=woode ... 66&bih=643

Do you need a lathe to make a ring shape?

The person who most recently contacted me said she found them somewhere online for £1-£1.30 each, depending on how many you buy. I can't imagine making something to sell for £1. I'd need to try a lathe and try making a ring to see how much work it really was before I could decide how much to...
