    New Shop Layout

So I'll be moving into a new house in a couple of months (or as soon as the solicitors decide to pull their finger out) and I've been spoiled with a bigger garage/workshop. This is a rough mock-up of the space: The room at the back is a small bathroom which I plan to keep, upgrading the sink...

    Toddler Bed Advice

Thanks all for the advice, much appreciated! Looking at it with fresh eyes I agree on the points about the sides being restrictive and shortening the useful lifespan of the bed. I think it's back to the drawing board on the design and I might consider just removing the sides all together and...

    Toddler Bed Advice

My 2 year old son is about to be evicted from his cot to make room for a new tenant later this year and is in need of a new bed. I'm now in the classic position where the better half has found a picture of what she wants online, and I've volunteered to build it for twice the price and to a...

    Finishing Tamped Concrete

Thanks for all of the responses, definitely some food for thought. I'm getting the impression that the self levelling compound approach is a bit out of my depth. Even if I were to get a decent finish with it, I can't seem to find any products that would actually work as a final finish anyways...

    Finishing Tamped Concrete

Few more questions: If I were to go with the self levelling compound, the main downside seems to be leaving it as the final finish due to it not being a wearing surface. Would painting over that with good quality flooring paint as a final finish be enough? Or does it really need some other form...

    Finishing Tamped Concrete

Thanks for all of the suggestions. There seems to be mixed reviews on the self levelling compounds with regards to the finish and durability. I like the idea of tongue and groove with a DPM underneath it, mainly because I have more experience ( albeit still limited) with something like that...

    Finishing Tamped Concrete

I've been looking at some Asec bolt locks. I'm at the in-laws for the holidays who have ordered some after hearing about our mishap. So depending on how that installation goes I'll most likely pick up a set of those.

    Finishing Tamped Concrete

Thanks Andy, Is this the kind of thing I should be looking for? https://www.screwfix.com/p/mapei-ultrap ... 25kg/4959f Just wondering if the slope of the floor would cause an issue?

    Finishing Tamped Concrete

Hi All, Apologies if I'm flogging a dead horse here, but I was hoping for some advice on what I can do to finish off my garage / workshop floor. I'm just starting off getting my garage converted into a workshop, and I'm planning on getting started by plasterboarding the ceiling, adding some...

    First Project

Thanks :D The bench itself isn't particularly heavy, which is no surprise considering the base didn't weigh much and the Paulk torsion box top is actually designed to be light/portable. However once I'd filled the bottom shelf and some of the torsion box with tools and whatnot, it made it feel...

    First Project

I finally had a full afternoon to dedicate to the workbench today, and I'm happy to say it's all done minus a few finishing touches: It's far from perfect, but for a first project I'm more than happy with it. Definitely learnt a lot and really enjoyed the process. Now I just need to...

    First Project

Hi All, Sorry for the lack of updates, progress has been a bit slow due to a raging hangover last weekend coupled with getting ready to start my new job next week. I decided to head down to the local B&Q for the plywood and get them to cut it into managable sizes for me: The cutting service...

    First Project

Thanks Will, it's getting there slowly. Nothing special but I'm happy with it as a first project. I did think about going to B&Q and getting them to cut it down for me, I've just had a few people warn me about the plywood from big box stores as the quality is apparently pretty dodgy...

    First Project

A bit more progress, the frame is now complete and on it's wheels. It's not perfect but everything is level and square at least. It's fairly light at the moment, so even with the wheels locked it slides around on the floor a bit, but hopefully once the top is on and I've filled it with tools...

    Axminster tools

My father in-law found out I was interested in getting into woodworking and brought me an Axminster catalogue when they came to see the new house (where I finally have a garage for a workshop). By the time I'd been through it and tallied up everything I wanted I realised I was going to need a...

    First Project

Well I've made a start at least, went to the local timber merchants and picked up the 2x4's and 2x6 for the frames and legs. Done all of the cuts for the frame, just waiting on my new Kreg jig to show up so I can get it all put together using pocket holes: Once the frames are screwed...

    First Project

I'm sure if Ron Paulk watched me build this bench he'd slowly end up losing his mind. Watched some of his videos last night, definitely some great tips on there. If I do decide to do the Parf holes I'll definitely be buying that jig he showcased. Looks like a great idea, just not sure I need...

    First Project

Thanks for the advice Bodgers, I had another look and put together a quick mock up of the garage with some tools and benches thrown in to see what kind of space I had either side, and it does look pretty tight at 1m deep. I think dropping it down to 750mm might be a better option:

    First Project

I've tried to get an idea of size in the garage to see just how much space it's going to take up, and as it's going to be an MFT I thought the size might be ok with the fact that it's going to be the main work surface for the whole workshop. I might lay out a rough frame before I make too many...

    First Project

Thanks for all the advice :D Good point, but looking at the pictures for the actual Paulk bench which is the same size, there's only one hole on the shorter ends. I might give the single hole a go as it's looking like I should have enough plywood left over to redo them if it becomes an issue...
