    Woodworking Courses

heligav I have been attending weekly afternoon classes with Chris Tribe in Ilkley, (and before that a one off dovetailing day in the summer and some informal help with sharpening an old Disston saw). Chris is very flexible, and able to suit his help and tuition to what a student needs. He has...

tall 'joinery bench' with twin record 53's

Thanks for the responses. The idea is that I next make a long low 'roubo' bench for planing and mortising along the other side of the shop. This joinery bench should allow me to hand dovetail wide boards and other work where I would find myself crouching too low (and straining my arthritic neck)...

tall 'joinery bench' with twin record 53's

After much lurking, browsing, reading and the odd post I've managed to design and build my first bench. It is 42'' high from 10 x 2 sawn redwood with a chunky oak jaw and 2 old vices restored by me. The left jaw is attached to the vice but right jaw unattached. No chain (like Jakes') to connect...

using two record 52's to make a twin screw vise?

Thanks for all this, I'll work on it, probably emulating Jake's ideas Martin

using two record 52's to make a twin screw vise?

Thanks for the quick responses. It seems I do need to connect the 2 vices and your solution Jake looks really good. I've just quickly been through the thread but need more time to study it before going ahead. I love the idea of using what I have already got to make something better than the...

using two record 52's to make a twin screw vise?

I'd like a twin screw vise to hold wide boards firmly on a bench (but not my main bench). Is it stupid to try to make one with 2 vintage record 52's and a chunky hard wood jaw between them? What could possibly go wrong? Martin

ts 200 and axminster rip fence upgrade

thanks Steve, I'm getting my head around it. Metal work is not something which comes naturally but the rip fence looks good and solid.

ts 200 and axminster rip fence upgrade

Thanks Andy, I'll call them again and try to get clearer about if it will work with my design for a table

Thanks Jake, I may build my own in the end.

ts 200 and axminster rip fence upgrade

Hi I know there are about 1000 ts200 threads out there but after sifting through a lot of them (and talking to axminster) I'm still unclear as to how to add the axi rip fence upgrade to it . I have quite a narrow workshop (7') . My thoughts are to make a movable table which also acts as a...

finding Ian Dalziels article from 2004 in GW

Hi all I'm trying to work out a design for a cabinet/workstation for a portable table saw. Apparently Ian Dalziel made one for an issue of GW in 2004. I can't locate the article even through my digital sub to GW, which only seems to go back to issue 185 in the archives. Could anyone point me in...

any advice/experience on using a record 52 as a tail vice?

Doug, thanks, I like it;, excuse my ignorance but how do the bars attach to the vice jaw?

any advice/experience on using a record 52 as a tail vice?

Paul, does the tail vice need an apron all the way along the bench? Doug, are the bars easy to find and fit?

any advice/experience on using a record 52 as a tail vice?

thanks a lot, this is all very useful stuff. It seems if I am prepared to spend a lot of beer tokens I may be best with either a veritas QR tail vice, a maguire wagon or a veritas twin screw. The thing I'm not sue about with a wagon (or inset) is that the vice cannot be used for anything else eg...

any advice/experience on using a record 52 as a tail vice?

Hi all, I'm (still) designing my new workbench, and having done everything for about 30 years on first, a stool, and then a workmate I actually have little experience of using a proper bench. I'd like to start using more hand tools and become more accurate and less covered in dust. I need some...

    using a leg vise

Hi all, I'm new but have lurked for a while and learnt a lot. I'm designing a workbench for myself, as part of my workshop project. I've watched and read a bit of the Schwarz and like the idea of a 7' chunky Roubo with a leg vise at front, a deadman and a vintage QR as tail vise. Has anyone...
