    Cutting disc

cutting aluminium with a grinder is asking for a facefull of exploded disc IMHO. are you wanting to cut through or grind away material? A saw of some kind if the former, carbide burr for the latter.

    Aluminium tower advice please

I'm lucky enough to work in industry. If its the right way to do it, thats what happens (generally). There's an acceptance that it's going to cost what it costs. Management don't look kindly on people splattering themselves across the factory floor. I've worked on plenty of sites that won't even...

    Aluminium tower advice please

In my experience they gloss over tricky questions like that. So long as you've been on the course, everyone's backside is covered and it's your fault if you get caught doing something stupid. In reality if you've got the outriggers set correctly you'd be fine hauling them up the outside. The...

    Aluminium tower advice please

We have a couple of sets of the youngman ones for work. Not used every day but they pay for themselves so quickly over hiring. We work as a team and can chuck one up in a few minutes - when we did our PASMA course a few years ago, we had ours built and packed away before the other guys on the...

Circlips - what's the magic secret?

I have a sykes pickavant circlip tool that I got in a job lot of stuff - the product code is 028300. Mines old but they're still available new (expensive). It's tightened by a screw so not reliant on hand pressure. It's a fantastic piece of kit.

    Acme nut help

Chronos in my experience are just resellers of far eastern stuff. There are some big players that have a range like McMaster - Zoro, Cromwell, MSC, Brammer - but they are harder to buy from as a private individual than McMaster. To answer the OP question - is the acme thread ok and just the...

    Diamond grinding cup

Given the low price of wheel and a cheapy angle grinder I'd just give it a go. Throw the money at a serious dust mask setup, you'll need it!

    Woden Vice Restored.

To be honest I'd not noticed! I only wanted the stand anyway, I might swap it for something nicer from the hoard.

    Woden Vice Restored.

Couldn't hit buy it now quick enough when it came up as >5 miles on my ebay search! Not a fan of the poo brown though. I was thinking I may use it to display some of my smaller clamp on vice collection....

    Woden Vice Restored.

Nice, I picked up this woden vice stand last week. Unusually it's in great condition- no grinder scars or weld spatter!

    Myford ML7 regrind

From your initial question - regrind or bearings - are you talking about the bed or the spindle? No bearings to replace on the bed, which I think is what everyone is assuming your asking about... I personally think myfords are hideously overpriced - they're better than a chinese mini lathe...

Adventures in metalwork and machine restoration!

bumped this thread up for the discussion on power files - pg12 is the last pics of mine - I should get round to updating this post! :ROFLMAO:

    Power file for saw sharpening

For handheld, there is the diprofil hand filing machine. Runs off a flexshaft drive, relatively common on ebay. They have a lot of different attachments for polishing and filing odd shapes. Static die filers are harder to come by and can command a pretty good price. I have had and sold a couple...

Hand is forced - new decking required

Not a fan of decking for all the reasons listed above. Guarantee if you go down the local tip, the wood bin will be half full of the stuff... My dad has a balcony above a wooden single story flat roof section of the house. When the original wooden one was too rotten to carry on with, we made a...

auto centre punch, how long do the pins last?

It's from lidl, I'd be amazed if it does more than 10 pops before it stops working... At work we use an auto centre punch a lot for marking out patterns. We used to be always breaking them - didn't matter if it was an eclipse or a cheapo one. About 10 years ago I bought a Beta tools one and it's...

    Repainting Cast Iron

Here's my most recent restoration, it actually took 4 coats because the colour was quite patchy. Just paragon enamel and a wipe of boiled linseed on the bare metal parts. I was lucky with this one, it only needed one screw making. My current project is a different kettle of fish, literally every...

    Repainting Cast Iron

I don't bother priming cast any more. Primer is to provide a key for the topcoat to stick to, cast is rough already and doesn't need it. 2 or 3 coats of a good brush applied enamel - like paragon, does the job spot on.

Best paint for a galvanised/slightly rusted metal roof?

I think you're after the impossible. You won't find a paint that will do a miracle cure and cost less than reskinning the roof. If it were my problem I would buy a can of the thick acrypol fibre reinforced paint, slap it on wherever you have a leak and just ignore it until you're able to fix it...

    Limitations of my lathe.

Which is why I have both! I've got almost a full set of Hardinge imperial 5C's in /64th sizes... its taken a while to find them all! Very gratifying to be able to open the drawer on my HLV and pull out the correct collet from the rack. I was just pointing out the short stock problem with the ER...

    Limitations of my lathe.

Another benefit for 5C - when tightened the collet closes at the very end, allowing you to hold very short workpieces. ER collets tighten along the full length of the collet so you need a much longer amount of material for it to hold properly.
