    Phillips / Posidriv Screwdrivers

FYI: There are also modulus (also called plusminus) Pozi & Phillips screwdrivers. Probably quite specialised but electricians tend to like them.

    Realigning blanks

I've seen numerous professionals tap a piece back into concentricity but it only works sometimes for me so I rely on the lever method I posted above. Edited the post to add a warning about burnishing.

    Cleaning abrasives

To answer several of the replies above: • A wire brush will clean the abrasive but will also help wear it away whereas silicone just cleans out the crud. • A rolled up plastic bag also works but doesn't last like silicone & is harder to control.

I've been asked to repost this from 2016. King Ozymandias of Assyria was running low on cash after years of war with the Hittites. His last great possession was the Star of the Euphrates , the most valuable diamond in the ancient world. Desperate, he went to Croesus, the pawnbroker, to ask for...

    Aha sharpening moment

As Jim Kingshott used to say "Sharpness in nothingness". Thus if light reflects off the cutting edge, you don't need a torch, then it's not sharp.

That's after turning the speed down & slightly loosening the holding pressure. Once running true I tighten everything back up. Edit: I forgot to...

    Speed Awareness Course

Brain laziness. It take the movement of one finger to indicate but the brain can't be bothered because that means having to concentrate continuously. Much easier to have 99 near misses & argue on the 100th when caught out.

Old blue Record CL2 tailstock - what morse taper?

You will need a thread protector to eject drive centres from the headstock. If you haven't got one don't put a drive into the morse taper because the headstock is solid & you can't use a knock out bar.

    Rats in a trap...

Then there is the tale that a farm worker liked to relate down the pub, of the rat that went for his throat whilst he was mucking out. The rat jumped from a feed rack over his shoulder to gain it's freedom but that doesn't make such a good story.
