How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

Did you enjoy it? Did he enjoy it? That’s all that matters right?

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

I had a go at an oilstone box. I’m pretty pleased with the result although it’s a long way from a fine piece. I think it will grace the workbench nicely especially after it gets worn in. I made it with a piece of sapele I had. I was pleased to use it although since it was a random offcut it may...

    Old school horsing around

It’s a beautiful piece, love it painted too. I am intrigued by this ‘squaring device’ though. Any more info or photos?

Withdrawn Boker Congress Whittler woodcarving knife

Boker Congress Whittler. Has 4 carbon steel blades and rosewood scales. It's in excellent working condition. I didn't get this as a collector's piece so all the blades have been rebevelled and there are some scratches on the main blade etching. I've had it from new for ten years and used it...

Pitting on back of vintage rebate plane iron

Ok, so I was prepared to just leave it and see how I got on. But I watched the Bill Anderson excerpt on restoring rebate planes on YouTube (woodandshop) and he mentioned zirconia for lapping. I thought I might as well give it a try just for experience so bought a metre of 80 grit cloth backed...

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

That's a really great suggestion, thanks. I was thinking that I'm going to need to bolster the end grain sections well on both sides with sacrificial pieces on this first box I'm doing. Hopefully it will be simple to find a workholding solution for it.

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

I can't believe I never thought of that, just turning the box over to get the other side of the stone! Great idea. I love these decorative boxes though.

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

Thanks all. I don't have a Forstner bit but I can see why it's an attractive idea. I started a box yesterday with a piece of sapele which was only just thick enough really for a 1" stone. Of course I didn't take into account the amount of wood removed by the saw ripping it in half and then...

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

Thanks. So the rebate is cut into the slope? I was thinking I'd have to cut the rebates first and then perhaps try and chamfer in between them with the same rebate plane. Having only ever cut one simple rebate before in my life I have no experience to know if this would work. Is it possible to...

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

Thanks. I'll give it a go and see how it goes!

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

I'd love to make an oilstone box with a lid something like this but I'm unsure of the hand tools and procedure to complete it neatly. I'm guessing it involves a rebate plane. Is this a project suitable for a woodworker with novice to intermediate skills? Ignore the fact that in the photo the lid...

Pitting on back of vintage rebate plane iron

Thanks all. Seems that the crux of hand tool woodworking for the hobbyist is learning to live with things and just getting on with it. Chances are the 'problem' is just something your mind has come up with and then making a big deal out of it!

Pitting on back of vintage rebate plane iron

Thank you for your replies. I'll give it a quick flatten then and try it out.

Pitting on back of vintage rebate plane iron

Hi all, I purchased a vintage straight rebate plane and the back of the iron has some pitting, unfortunately mostly at the cutting edge. What would you advise doing about it? I'm well aware of how long it will take to lap it out with sandpaper on glass and hope not to have to go down that...

    Record 52 1/2E vice overhaul

I have a Record 52 1/2E vice which I'm nearly ready to install. It's in very good condition I think and quite clean. It has clearly had grease put on the thread and the quick release bar in the past, and this has dried on now. It seems to have a smooth action and the QR works. My question is...

    Selling stuff (again)

In my limited experience, Etsy is takes a lot of time to set up, and you need excellent photos (like professional quality) because that is what people see first. It is a 'handcrafted' marketplace but seems more to be the domain of sellers who can make things very quickly and sell in the...

Planing a board flat - Is there literally no light when testing with a straight edge?

As another relative novice, I remember quickly learning that I was setting my plane iron too heavy, and how the adjustment wheel only needs to be turned a fraction to make a difference. Heavy shavings obviously won't flatten a piece well towards the end of the process, so lightening up can...
