    Clamping an arch

This is for the top of the door so the two sides of the arch are joined by a 3/4" piece connecting two mortices. The pictured mortice measures 1 5/8" X 3/4", is that likely to be deep enough? I can run a longer bit through them if necessary. I am making progress with some of the books...

    Fitting a window

Somebody sent the local building inspectors out to me a while back, but after looking at the old windows they pronounced that anything would be better than them and that they had no further interest. Nonetheless it is good feedback that seals are desired since I have never seen a seal on a...

    Fitting a window

This is a sketch of my current plan, with the oakum and the AQ21 marked in red:

    Fitting a window

I have found 1/2" oakum on amazon, I am assuming that I should place a run of it at the outside of the gap and pack in behind with NHL 5 so that the oakum keeps external moisture out of the lime. Any chance you could post a picture of a folding wedge? I am not sure what it is, and an online...

    Fitting a window

I am cutting the outer frame for what will be the first of eight casement windows, flush cut, and have three questions: 1. Since neither the lintel nor the windowsill are perfectly straight, what is the best sealant to use top and bottom? I a guessing I should cut the frame to be as tight as...

    Clamping an arch

Can anyone recommend a workstand designed to clamp a piece of wood such as this in a vertical orientation? I have figured out (I think) how to cut the mortice so I just need to hold it in place while I work on the end. I could clamp it to the banister but I would rather keep the dust out of...

    Clamping an arch

Can anyone recommend a method for cutting a mortice right through the arch? My router has an 'edge band' attachment which might allow me to run a straight cutting bit perpendicular to the face of the arch, but there must surely be a standard method.

    Clamping an arch

I am not following that bit. When you refer to 'hot melt', does the glue come apart with a heat gun before the oak starts to char? By putting a piece of paper between the two pieces of wood does that reduce the damage to the oak? What size floating tenon do you recommend? The arch is 4" X 2".

    Clamping an arch

This is the connection between the two sides at top of the arch, the other connections are similar. If the double tenon, if that is the right term, is not big enough I could still cut something longer. If I am understanding it right, a glue block is made a of a soft wood and glued onto the...

    Clamping an arch

I bought some of these clamps for the job: https://www.bahco.com/en/p/plastic-hand ... -d9-9b-3b/ The arch is connected with a double mortice at each end and a block of wood to connect them (I think that is a biscuit?). I should have asked on here for advice before now since none of the books...

    Clamping an arch

This is the top section of a stable door that I have cut and is ready to glue together. I am guessing it should be clamped from one arch to the opposing corner unless anybody tells me otherwise. It is only the second item that I have made out of wood, the first having been an airing cupboard...

    Oak door expansion

I installed green oak lintels and beams of 4" section nine years ago which all show 17% - 18% from being in the cottage with no windows during that time, so I am guessing that is the average about which most of the exterior oak will settle (assuming my meter is accurate). I have been planning...

    Oak door expansion

I found the information from the US Forestry Service and it says 15% - 20% for Cardiff, which is probably a little drier than here in the west where the humidity mostly lives between 70% and 100%. The last few weeks have been abnormally dry which is probably why I am showing 14% on the thinner...

    Oak door expansion

The pictures are of the lower section of a stable door that I have cut and is ready to glue together, but I have recently been told that I should leave a slight gap between the slats so as to allow for expansion. Can anyone here verify that, and give an idea of how much gap I should leave? I...

    Oak cracks and splits

I was assured that they were properly seasoned by the sawmill.
