    Thread Cutting Change Gears

I have been playing around with my old imperial Holbrook.... and what you have printed confirms what I have found. If you make Layshaft gear 1 the same as the spindle gear and layshaft gear 2 fifty (or a 100) and the leadscrew gear 127 you will have a fair range of metric threads off the...

    Screw chucks

I have a system for making fruit, until now I have been using a crude wooden screw chuck mounted in a real chuck with real jaws. I have decided that I don't like real jaws so close to my fingers so made a couple of over engineered screw chucks. The only steel I could find was a short end of 6...

    Reduction gear for headstock?

I use delron ok, but for speed reduction I think a layshaft might be a better way to go, It is more trouble to install but the bits are a lot cheaper. axle, pulleys. screw a big pulley to a small one. on a swinging layshaft.

    Shattering bandsaw blade?

if it is easy for you to get one why not try a finer blade 20-26 tpi ? Failing that if possible put some steel bar say 1/2" square at the beginning of the cut so that the thick piece of steel is still supporting the blade as it finishes cutting the thin piece. This assumes the blade pivots, so...

    Shattering bandsaw blade?

If it is shattering near the end of the cut the teeth are too big for the pressure you are using. 14 tpi is a good all round size. 10 pi is more for 20-60mm thick stuff. just try reducing the pressure on the blade. Also cut something much thicker. see how it goes. photo shows Cut with 14tpi...

    SK100 Chuck equivalent.

I have an sk114 I think, was (still am) disappointed with it, Chuck works fine but it is a loose fit on the lathe spindle. It is not supported on the inside bush as it is bored too big. All the cheap faceplates from the same supplier are perfect. Sometimes using a 6" face plate with wood...

    Strengthening spongy wood

I would first turn them as they are as you would turn wet wood. Then allow lots of cheap ebay superglue to soak in it. Let them be for a week or so then finish turn. You may have to wipe some parts with superglue and "fine finish" the item.

Shed - extractor fan, or passive vents

What is your shed for ? If you are keeping any kind of livestock much ventilation is crucial to their health. Most animals can survive a great deal of cold but not being wet or badly ventilated. I fitted adjustable vents opposite sides, high up so things (chicks) on the ground were out of the...

    small steps,

There are a lot of factors working against landlords continuing renting out. The rise in house prices is only one. The second is the government 2-3 years ago increased tax on rental income from 20% like everybody else to 27.5% and the cost of accountancy fees, maintenance and insurance does not...
