That looks like it has (presumably harder steel welded across the top to reduce dings. Is that the case and if so what steel tends to be used?

I did a pub crawl of the UK a few years ago in my campervan and was stunned that the Irish didnt run the world, having seen their combined pub and hardware shops. Apologies for being a bit off topic but I am trying to get a Kity 644 variable speed lathe going properly. At present the variable speed doesnt actually vary and I think there is a connection missing. Could I ask where you got the Kity manual from in case they have kne for the 644.TIA...
