    Lathe Centre Set

Thanks for your replies. :) The 2 driving centres are 5/8" & 1", the 1/8" is a mistake! Chronos are selling the same set for £31 +postage, so it must be ok quality. The set from Banggood is in stock in their UK warehouse so I can get it in a few days & no worries about any extra fees. I think...

    Lathe Centre Set

Our Mens Shed was donated a non running Hegner wood lathe & I took on the task of getting it working. I've replaced a broken vfd and manufactured a tool rest which was completely missing! It is now nearly operational and it's time to think about accessories. It has been tested with borrowed...

    Hegner Lathe Help Needed

Our men in sheds was given a hegner wood lathe. It is a later model one with 3 phase 1 hp motor & 3 speed pulleys. The first time it was tried out it was blowing fuses. I looked at it last week & it was working ok but with a noise from the motor. Then it suddenly stopped working & hasn't worked...

    Stick blender for paint

An piece of thick steel wire bent into a triangle shape with a tail to go into a cordless drill is all I ever use to mix paint. I use tig welding rod but an old wire coat hanger would work too. Another alternative is beaters from a scrap food mixer but they are harder to clean.

    Some Restored Clamps

They were all bought at a local weekly auction. The carver was in a big steel toolbox of kango chisels, I kept the box & clamp, put the chisels back into the auction & got my money back!

    Vintage Pine Trunk

Thanks for the replies, some useful advice there. =D> I was going to try meths & wire wool or a scotch pad but soap & water could work too. I have a pumice based hand cleaner which might get the oil off without doing any harm. Whatever I do I'll try to preserve as much patina as I can & take...

    Vintage Pine Trunk

I bought this pine trunk today with the intention of refurbishing it to sell on. It's really nicely made with dovetail joints & iron binding on the edges. It has been living in a garage serving as a tool box & there are signs of oil stains on the lid. The base smells a bit of waste oil &...

Pine Tables - Wax or Varnish?

I bought some blackfriars Danish oil today (it's not cheap!) and I plan to do some tests using all the finishes I have to see what I like the best.

    Some Restored Clamps

Even though this mix has graphite it doesn't dirty your hands - in fact it leaves them very clean & soft, must be the oils in it. 8) Best method to apply it is to heat the metal & polish with a heat gun, apply with a toothbrush or cloth, heat again to get the polish to flow into the metal...

    Some Restored Clamps

Thank for the complements! =D> I use a 200l plastic barrel for my electrolysis so I am able to do a 36" clamp in one go! 8) I collect bench vices & the shade of record blue seems to vary a bit. It is supposed to be Roundel Blue but I tried it and it was totally wrong! I had one vice with...

Pine Tables - Wax or Varnish?

Thanks for the replies, a good mix of opinions. =D> The 'Hard Wax Oil' is from Lidl & I've only use it on the wooden handles of hammers I've restored. It is easy to apply & it leaves a nice grippy finish on the wood (I didn't sand down the wood after oiling) but it's also easy to clean - my...

    Some Restored Clamps

Next up is a Carver f clamp. This had a thick coating of paint overspray & dirt, most of which was removed in the electrolysis tank. By the time it was clean most of the original paint was gone. I decided I liked the bare metal look so I stripped the remaining paint off with rotary wire...

    Some Restored Clamps

Next up is a heavy duty Eclipse 10" g clamp. The threaded part was cleaned with a 6" wire brush on a bench grinder & the blue was repainted, again finished with wax.

    Some Restored Clamps

Thought I'd post some pics of some clamps I restored recently. First up a record 135 sash clamp which had a good coating of surface rust which I removed with electrolysis. Then the bare metal was polished up with wd40 & a green scotch pad and the blue bits repainted. It was finished with a...

Pine Tables - Wax or Varnish?

I bought this nest of pine tables last week. I'm guessing they came from a closed down factory as the wood hasn't had its final sanding and there is no finish on the wood. Plan is to sand them smooth then apply a finish but I'm not sure what to use. I have these at my disposal plus some...
