Thanks Jacob! Ah this sawmill has left the pith in the centre board and has said it has cracks in. They have also said that the centre board is always the most stable, I'm assuming if this has the pith in then that is not true. Thanks as always Gary.

Hello, If I'm going to use the centre slab from a tree to build a table. Should I be cautious of the pith/heart? Should I not use the centre board and opt for one above of below? Obviously the centre board would be the widest which is what I would be after, happy to resin any small cracks...

Absolutely, the same as my findings. Surface was fairly dry, however when pushing the prongs deep it certainly rose. Thanks a lot

Thanks for the response! I've taken quite a few sample readings and comparatively theres a big difference showing between green and interior dried. However, the walnut was cut around 3 months ago but was showing around 20% until I chiseled a small amount from the end and that revealed...

It definitely just the surface thats dry. Surface reads 17 - 18% Pushing the prongs into full depth gets to about 24% in some places. So I chiselled a small square out of one of the ends and took a reading which was 50% + Looks like it'll be staying outside. Cheers

Thanks a lot for that! A lot of reading I have been doing was suggesting that standing trees do not really reduce in moisture content. However if the base of a tree looks like the above, I can't see how it can retain moisture for years. I'm sure I'm wrong thought! thanks

I'm fairly sure I bought the moisture meter after the walnut and did do some readings, however I can't for the life of me remember what they were. They may have been around 35% but I can't be sure at all. Thanks
