    Do I need a No03 hand plane ?

On block planes, I hated my first one (102 I think), but I got a 60 1/2 which is fabulous. I've gone back to the other more recently and found I can now sharpen and set it up better and now I find it OK, though I would almost always reach for the other one. Interestingly, Paul Sellers thinks...

    Wood Identification Fun

It won't if the density is 620kg/m3. Not many woods sink (needs to have density >1000 kg/m3). I have some massaranduba which has a density of 1,080 kg/m3 so that does.

    Storage Crates

Solent Plastics is a fantastic company. Always helpful and happy to advise on requirements, and competitive too. Rymans are usually a little cheaper for the most common sizes of Really Useful Boxes (though I may be factoring in my student discount – it's nice to have that again in my late 50s!)...

    What wood

Meranti get used for many species within the Shorea genus, which also includes 'Philippine Mahogany' (luan). See meranti I'm not sure that the top-right panel is two pieces joined – it looks to me more like heartwood and sapwood, which I think makes it more likely to be sapele. If this is a...

    Mystery tool.

It's absolutely a simple screw starter, as @Limey Lurker said. I bought one identical to this about 25 years ago. It can give screws a better start than an ordinary gimlet can as those tend to have fairly small threads.

Is there any trick to make unscrewing easier from old wood?

I agree with the advice to use a brace. I know from bitter experience that a drill/driver is likely to wreck the head. Probably best not use a modern screwdriver, even if it appears to be the right size, as the heads usually taper in so that the pressure is put on the top edges of the slot, not...

    Budget-ish bench grinder

Many thanks for this explanation. I don't have facilities for turning spacers or bushes, so I think I won't be able to make an adaptation to mine. But just in case, can I clarify a couple of points: This flange, I presume, is what I called a washer – one on each side of the wheel? A tube that...

    Budget-ish bench grinder

Thanks. I think it's not too bad now I've fiddled with it, but I'll see how it performs when I use it properly in the next few days, and then I'll try this suggestion if it needs further adjustment.

    Budget-ish bench grinder

Do you mean just moving the wheel around relative to the shaft? The main issue for me, on the cheap Titan 8" grinder, I think is the washer.

    Budget-ish bench grinder

Just today I found some useful advice on reducing vibration from wheel wobble, which might help: Highland Woodworking Tools

    Budget-ish bench grinder

How did you modify it? I have just been thinking I shouldn't have bought the Titan as I want a white wheel but can't find a 200mm one which is 20mm wide (without spending more than I paid for the grinder). Closest I can find is 25mm wide.

    Shinto Rasps

They do look great. I was impressed when I saw Sellers using one. But are they so much better than a surform and traditional rasp, which I have, that it's worth the money?

    The Shed from Hell....

From an environmental perspective, using energy to heat a shed even a little in an attempt to stop condensation doesn’t seem like the best approach. There is also an environmental cost to the insulation, of course, but at least that’s a long-term solution.

Bird, Bat and Anything Nest Box Challenge.

That's a really good idea to incorporate it into the shed. I'll remember that for when I build a new bike shed, hopefully later this year (I might need wood prices to come down again first though!).
