    re-wickering an old chair

Having repaired the frame of a lovely old victorian nursing chair, I'm now re-wickering the seat and back. One long and difficult job using the 7-step method, canes breaking and fraying if I do as advised on various YouTubes . Seems like soaking the canes for no more than 20min before using...

    Startrite 301 bandsaw

I'm also looking for a similar type of bandsaw, mostly for shaping bowl blanks. Needs to be able to take an 8-12" half log - throat. Suggestions please.

    orbital sander advice

Thanks, I agree, used several makitas for years, all good solid gear. Will probably go for this.

    orbital sander advice

any opinions on the MAKITA BO6050J DUAL ACTION sander. Looks like it might do more rough sanding to get rid of scuff and plane marks than the Bosch. The festool and Mirka look to be out of my price bracket (max £250-ish)

    orbital sander advice

Thanks for the suggestions. There are a lot of festool sanders, suggestions as to which? From experience, it needs to be fairly aggressive at first.

    orbital sander advice

My old sanders (belt and rectangular orbital) are not doing the job on a table top which I had planed off. The belt always leaves marks which the orbital can't get out. Any advice out there about good orbitals which might cut the mustard? About time I re-equipped.

    yes, understood, and thanks again.

    Long drill or extension needed

Thanks, that's a great idea as it allows me to use a heavy bar that hopefully won't wobble too much over distance. I appreciate the point about torsion. Will need to remain patient! By 'relieve' I guess you mean reduce the diameter a bit on the following sections of the bar, with the grinder, in...

    Long drill or extension needed

Andy, thanks for the extra explanation! This is similar to what I've been doing with an augur fixed into a drill extension, but it wanders a lot on the way through and leaves a lot of eccentric mess which is difficult to clean up. I think I shall try the other suggestion of grinding a cutting...

    I'm confused, Andy! Tim

    Long drill or extension needed

I need to bore out 400-500mm x 10-20mm holes in one of my projects. My current augur bits aren't long enough and don't remain centred once you start drilling deep. Any suggestions either for long eg Forstner bits (can't find online so far) or for an extension bar that I could lock a drill into?

    Ash extending table top

I'm planning an expanding table for our kitchen, seating 6 without central leaf and 8 with leaf in place. Most designs plank the top crossways but I want to use ash with a strong grain which I think will look better with the grain longways. Any reason NOT to do this? Apart from the obvious...

    Union Graduate Motor Removal

Thanks all for loads of valuable advice - got the motor inverted and everything is working well. Only problem is a developing knock which I'm pretty sure is motor bearings. This of course is a pain, as I have to dismantle the lathe to get the motor out again and, hopefully, fix it, although at...

    Union Graduate Motor Removal

One further question: I can't get clear info about whether the remote control (low voltage) cabling for on/of, forward/reverse and speed control potentiometer needs to be screened. Also, the instructions say the cable can be anything from 0.5mm to 1.5mm (20-14AWG) - that seems a huge range. Any...
