    AWVSL900 headstock wiggle

Many thanks for your reply Alex. I actually hadn't noticed the locking bolts on the other side! Unfortunately, tightening them didn't help. I took the cover off the head stock to take a look at things and I'm fairly sure that it is the pin where the play is coming from: It has just a tiny...

    AWVSL900 headstock wiggle

Hi all, I have an Axminster AWVSL900 - haven't done much with it to date, just little things here and there, but starting to use it a little more now. I've noticed that the headstock has a bit of play when locked into position and tightened up. I've got the headstock at one of the lock points...

    Spindle turning jitter

Hi all, I'm trying to turn a baseball bat and running into some issues and I was wondering if anyone might have some advice. The bat is basically the maximum my lathe bed can work with, and I'm using a drive spur at one end, and a live center at the other - they are slightly off center from...

    Replacing sash window's sill

    > Don't use any bloody silicone when you drop the new box into place Haha. The number of things in this house which I've found that were fixed with silicone... Slates, carpet, and of course the windows. Previous owner must have had a great time "fixing" stuff.

    Replacing sash window's sill

Wow - thank you everyone! Amazing feedback. Time to do a bit more investigation about the state of the rest of the window then. I think the wood on the upper and lower sash are okay - but they are definitely in need of being stripped and repainted. Will find out about the state of the pully...

    Replacing sash window's sill

Hi all, Looking for a little advice about replacing the sill on a sash window. The sill is rotten and when it rains, water is seeping between it and the side stop (I think that's the right terminology) - then running down behind the lathe and plaster. Attached are a couple of photos of it. The...

    (Former) Church doors

Thank you for the replies! > If it's failed, as appears to be at least partially the case, this type of varnish tends to deteriorate into a yellow crumbly roughness whereas most short oil polyurethane type varnishes, formulated primarily for interior use, tend to deteriorate into wafer thin...

    (Former) Church doors

Hi all, Been doing some work in our local village hall (a former church) with others to spruce things up a bit (mainly cleaning, painting, etc) and one of the things that was raised was that the main doors to the building could do with a little TLC as well. There is a little graffiti on them...

    Ducting

Perfect - thanks for the suggestions! > can't vouch for there not being any consequences though. Oh yes - there would be, if that's what we did on a "romantic" break... :D

    Ducting

Finally getting around to installing some fixed ducting in my double garage for a 100mm extractor (HVLP). Finding ducting is almost as difficult as picking an extractor! Axminster's 100mm stuff seems really expensive, although perhaps I'm just being unrealistic! I keep reading about how...

    Filling woodworm?

That's the plan for the second one, which you can just see on the right of the pictures slightly out of frame :).

    Filling woodworm?

Hi all, Moved into a house over the summer, where the folks before left behind these massive timber beams they said they found while doing some renovation. I think they are elm, but not 100% certain. I thought I'd clean one of them up and have it as a bit of a feature in one of the rooms...

    Oak worktop suppliers.

I've used Worktop Express on 4 separate occasions and have been really happy with the worktops from them. Each order was relatively small - worktops for individual kitchens basically, but its been good. Only once was there a hiccup, and that was due to the local delivery company rather than WE.

    Hardwood suppliers near Edinburgh

I've picked up some good stuff from Scottish Wood at Oakly before: http://www.scottishwood.co.uk/ . A little detour from Perth to Edinburgh, but no more than going up to Dunkeld. They have a cabin with loose boards that you can go in and pick up - usually plenty of oak and randomly other things...
