    Mallet ‘powered ‘ gouges

Having been taught by a master carver using Pfeil gouges, I’ve built a collection of my own (full size). I’ve not seen the need to tune them up on arrival and have used them ‘straight out of the box’ so to speak. The supplier I use (and who have the largest range at very reasonable prices) are...

Workshop improvements Vs actually making stuff

Although making things is what my workshop was originally designed for (I took up Bodging and carving in my retirement) I get as much pleasure out of fannying about for hours on end planning, measuring, researching, designing and eventually knocking up things like this. I do create at least a...

    Bench dog hole tear out

Cheers, I’m definitely going to invest in the Simon James WH set up (and flog the Veritas hold down. I’ve also got a lot more ideas for clamping stuff down too which is brilliant 👍

    Bench dog hole tear out

Thanks for your replies folks. I realise now that the ribbed stems on the Veritas hold down are a bad idea unless your bench top is hardwood. I’ve looked at the Gramercy holdfasts (which I like the look of) but they’re hard to get in the UK. As Cabinetman has said, there is a supplier in...

    Bench dog hole tear out

Thanks Cabinetman, I take it you mean Dieter Scmid in Berlin? I’ve bought from them before and they’re superb

    Bench dog hole tear out

For quite some time I’ve been using Veritas bench dogs and pups on my bench, which is made of European Redwood. A little while ago I splashed out on a Veritas Bench Hold Down, as I often need to pin items down on my bench to carve. The Hold Down is a brilliant piece of kit, however the ribs on...

    CORRECT ACCESSORIES FOR METAL PEGBOARD

Having just purchased one of these: Seville Classics Garage Steel Peg Board 6ft, 1.83m and Peg Kit I’ve already discovered that I probably won’t need some of the hooks, but definitely will need spares of the others. There seems to be a lot of suppliers of pegboard hooks out there but the...

    Storage for green woodworking tools

Hi, I’ve seen a few threads on here regarding tool storage (peg boards, French cleats etc) but wondered what the green woodworking fraternity consider is the best method of storing larger tools like adze, axes, froes, drawknives and so on. I have wall space and would prefer them to be on display...

Can anybody beat this for old equipment

And have spent a fair few hours restoring this old James Archdale treadle lathe, which I think is at least 100 years old

Can anybody beat this for old equipment

I’ve had this pillar drill for a while. I think it’s a Metabo and is stamped 445/1

    Any Archdale machines/stories/photos out there?

During Covid lockdown I’ve been giving this Archdale treadle lathe a bit of restoration. I’m led to believe it was used for a fair bit of its life by a pattern maker - and came with quite a lot of chucks and attachments (see photos). I haven’t been able to find another like it anywhere online...

    Hand Operated Pillar Drill

Folks, thanks for all your advice, particularly on the auto feed mechanism. Having attempted to strip it down, I can see that the problem lies in the fact that the slotted screw at the top of the flywheel (which shows proud on my photo) is seized tight. I guess this is the reason that the...

    Hand Operated Pillar Drill

Everything in your description is fine Bod, except the chuck does not lower. That’s what I need to investigate

    Hand Operated Pillar Drill

Thanks for the link Geoff. I’ll have a go at stripping it down later in the week (Chief of Staff has directed decorating ops this week). I have a feeling that the answer lies somewhere in that central friction feed column, as everything else is working (e.g. the flywheel and chuck both turn...

    Hand Operated Pillar Drill

Thanks Andy. I thought that was the case, although clearly something is wrong. The knob on the left is a screw, which seems to have the effect of locking the top spinning wheel. I think there must be a gear issue so I guess I need to strip it down completely to investigate
