    Ahoy New Turners

It took me a few months to get one from Amazon when I was looking. It's often out of stock. Of course, there are other vendors selling via Amazon which may be cheaper. Like the vendor I bought the Phil Irons book from, then had to get a refund 4 weeks later because they didn't have it in stock...

    Ahoy New Turners

Just a quick heads up. GMC Publications who produce Woodturning magazine have a deal on the Keith Rowley book, Woodturning: A Foundation Course (with DVD) for £13.99 + P&P. Quote code R4842 at the checkout.

    Timber - learning and costs

IIRC Tony buys in bulk from a larger supplier for his own pens, and any profit he makes goes to Help for Heroes. I think that one is the same type sold by Charnwood. I haven't tried one, but if Tony is selling them, it is likely the one he uses.

    Timber - learning and costs

The only reason I factored cost in was because that was one of the questions asked. I'm looking at the question from the position of someone starting out. I do get what you are saying, but the number of mistakes I made when starting out would soon have made buying blanks financially non-viable...

    Timber - learning and costs

Totally get where you are coming from there. I still class myself as a beginner, because I get so little time at the lathe. Every cut for me is a practice cut. When I first started I was so strapped for cash that sometimes a buying a tube of superglue was out of reach, which is why I started...

    Timber - learning and costs

I've had good results with firewood from my local petrol stations. They do a bag for under a fiver. Other than that it's a case of keep your eyes open for anyone felling trees, and cadge. You can sometimes pick up old table legs at landfill/amenity sites, but make sure you have seriously good...

    Cherry staining.

Fungal growth perhaps? (mould) I gathered a sycamore which was blown down during the infamous "hurricane bawbag" less than a week after it came down. This was painted on the ends with PVA and stored under my workbench. Every piece I have turned has started out looking beautifully white(ish) and...

    Grinder dressing

I got one of the stone type ones free with my grinder. It looks like a bit of ferrous breeze block. Absolute gash, and possibly why it was free. :) Bought a silverline one on fleabay for about thirty bob or so in 2012. Still doing exactly what is says on the tin/tub/box/blister-pack.................

    Dice cup...string?

How about some thin wire rope? You could drill a 2mm hole in each piece and epoxy it in, or make up some articulated arrangement with eyelets.

    Bottle stoppers

Hmmmm....... I wonder if anywhere else does them in the UK? Axminster blew it with me big time during the Xmas break, so there is no way they will get another coin from me. Edit: Found some. More expensive maybe, but free delivery, so that just about evens it out. Also sent by Royal Mail so...

    Metal powder and CA

I had very similar experiences, trying to fill cracks with sawdust or metal powders and CA glue. I watched all the youtubers filling cracks with wood dust/metal powders/coffee grounds, and spotting glue in on top before turning and finishing. When I tried, the filler seemed to just fall back out...

    Which show?

True, but I'd drive the A90 over the A85 any day of the week.

    Turning Elm

Elm is lovely to turn and has a really nice smell when cutting. You can get a lovely shine right off the tools. I have some lovely boards I got from my local supplier, which will appear as part of a top secret project once I'm fully fit again. I even have some that's lightly spalted, and other...

    Turning a coconut shell?

I would say anything is fair game. Holding it might be a challenge, but work that out and you're off. Cindy Drozda turned a Kohlrabi so I see no reason not to try.

    Which show?

Harrogate isn't all that local to Mull. ;) I've been to the Neltons show at Ingliston, and I went to the one at Brodies near Dunkeld last year after the Neltons one was cancelled. That was a good day, although not a large scale event, and I've been back to Brodies since. On my last visit I asked...
