    Framola brackets for shed project

I’ve used Framola hardware to make a pergola out of 6” cedar at my farther in law’s house. The final construction is very stable and whilst it’s not as fancy as proper wood joinery, they’re the best looking brackets available and the whole process was easy enough (save for lugging 6” timbers...

Any oak framing experts out there?

Evening chaps… bit of an unusual one; a friend of a friend is having issues with water ingress through a glazed green oak framed gable end. I’ve not seen it in person but have a few photos (and can get more), but from what I can see, there’s no sealing detail between the glass and the oak...

    Pumped drain to sewer etc

Building regulations require you to use gravity drainage where possible; I’ll need to check to get you which part to look at if you want to read up on it but it’s definitely in there so if you can, avoid pumped systems as it’s another thing to fail. That being said, ready to install systems...

    Inefficient appliance repair.

Reminds me of a time my boiler suffered a failure and I called Viessmann to request a call out and gave them the part number of the hose (source of the failure), and the expansion vessel (which I deduced had failed leading to the hose trying to accommodate expansion. I specifically instructed...

HELP, oak project pack boards are split and have knots falling out.

Agree on filler…. A black contrast is somehow far less obvious (or perhaps offensive) than a slightly off colour match. I’ve never been a fan of the pva and sawdust fix but I’m hardly an expert woodworker so might just be incompetent!

    Twister FU-180

Sorry to be late to the party but another upvote for Simon Hope and the Twister 180. It’s a great lathe that has served me just fine. Build quality is good, it’s quiet, smooth, powerful enough and a joy to use. As another has pointed out, it’s the baby sister to the Axminster 406 (with...

    Titanium hammers?

I’ve never understood the argument for a titanium hammer… 12oz of titanium is the same weight at 12oz of steel and they carry the same energy when swung with the same effort. To be fair, I’ve never used one so can’t comment if they would “feel” different but but gut feel is that people who pay...

    A dilemma of skirting boards

I disagree with your analysis of the function of skirting and architrave. In my opinion, its primary function is to take the abuse that would otherwise damage a decorated wall. No skirting/shadow gap walls and the like might look contemporary and fresh when new, but they wouldn’t hold up to...

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

A cleverer man would just control the heating element!

    Mortgage rates / interest etc

I agree with the point you’re making, but highlight that if it’s in your account, even before it’s spent, it’s being spent by the bank making the wealthy wealthier.

    CamVac 386-5 or Axminster AW118CE

I have a compact twin motor camvac (can check model number later if needed) and whilst it’s great at sucking, the bin fills very quickly and it’s a mess opening it up and emptying it when it’s full. I’m toying with a separator but in hindsight I should have bought bigger. The exhaust...

Yet another shedshop Mike's way. Ish

I agree… I=bd^3 and all that. I’m also uneasy with the way the rafters are constructed. Seemingly a laminated design with the continuous element acting on a cantilevered “pad” rather than the sole plate. Not saying it won’t work but it’s an unconventional way of doing it.

Apple AirTags Used To Find Stolen Tools?

The main problem is the tag will likely “lock” onto the thief’s phone (assuming they have an iphone) and they’ll then get a warning that the tag is following them. I don’t know how quickly this occurs but as other have pointed out, it’s an anti stalking feature that basically prevents it from...

    Are Festool extractors better?

Festool dust extractors are good, but I’d say nothing special in terms of how much they suck. However, they have very good filtration and like all festool kit, they have neat little features and work superbly with other festool kit. The warranty is amazing too should you ever need it. With...
