    Ducting

+1 for soil pipe ducting. There’s a good video on YouTube on how to make adaptors to different sizes, if you need something non-standard or (like me) award yourself extra points for doing things on the cheap. Video is here: Give Travis a chance, he rocks! Here are some pics of a very...

    Kity 419

Hi there, Like yours, my Kity 419 came without its riving knife. I decided to make my own, and followed advice from other forum users to make it out of tool steel, rather than mild steel. I did a thread a while ago in which I complied all the useful threads I'd found on Kity419- in there...

    cap iron for a stanley bailey no.8 - 2 5/8" width

Hi All, Thank you all very much for the replies, offers of assistance and photos. Re the “Cap Iron knowledge” thread, I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t make it all the way through! At the moment, I’m leaning towards having a go at making one, if I can find a suitable bit of stock...

    cap iron for a stanley bailey no.8 - 2 5/8" width

Hi Folks, A pal of mine has a No. 8 Stanley plane which is missing the cap iron (NB: 2 5/8" width, wider than the No. 7 which is 2 3/8"). Sorting it out is a bit of a joint project for us. I put a post in the "Wanted" section in case anyone had one lying around, but no luck there. They...

    DIY carving axe

Nice one Pete! I'm intrigued by the extra "point" on the underside, just above where your index finger would be if you choked right up on the handle. Is it an aesthetic feature, or is there another purpose? I'm interested to know how you think it performs. Cheers, Sven

Machining welded seam off inside surface of pipe

Cheers Hitch, Yes, I found reference to that method on the Practical Machinist site (for square tube, but same principle). I thought of fashioning something with a carbide tip from a circular saw blade... but I'm missing the pneumatic ram element, and would have to "persuade" it with a big...

    High accuracy square-setting jig

Musicman, Thank you for an excellent pair of posts. Extremely clearly explained, and top quality pictures. I have a couple of squares I have been meaning to sort out, and I am really glad to have seen your post before getting around to it. Cheers. Sven

Machining welded seam off inside surface of pipe

Thanks very much for the more recent batch of responses. OK, you've convinced me, the holesaw is a bad idea #-o Chaoticbob, I think your prediction sounds pretty accurate, you summed up all the doubts I had! I did some research into Retire2004's suggestion of using "cold drawn seamless"...

Machining welded seam off inside surface of pipe

Gents, Thank you all for your comments. In response: Myfordman: Oh no! If there was anyone who I was hoping for a solution from, it was you! Thank you for responding anyway. Adidat: I think you're right that the chance of the holesaw catching is high. I'd imagined putting it into my battery...

    DIY carving axe

Thanks for that Steve. I forgot to say that I used a small "spoon knife" to texture the surface of the handle, then gave it a very light rub with 240g sandpaper just to smooth off the sharpest of edges. The result is a satin, but still very grippy surface which feels great. Sven

Machining welded seam off inside surface of pipe

Hi Folks, I'm planning to make a wood-fired forge based on the Whitlox forge: http://whitloxhomestead.com/. The air supply for this forge is based on two 600mm steel pipes that run along the bottom of the V-shaped channel, with one pipe fitting fairly snugly inside the other. For the...

    Pyrography kit advice

I have a very basic one like the Lidl one, and I'd recommend it as a starting point for a beginner. It's not the most comfortable thing to hold, and can be tricky to control (as there's no temperature control), but it's good enough to give you an idea of whether you'd like to get into it a bit...

Best cheap protective for mild steel

John Heisz did a (reasonably scientific) experiment comparing water-based polyurethane varnish (an ultra-thin wipe on-wipe off coating) and paste wax here: http://www.ibuildit.ca/ibuildit-forum/viewtopic.php?id=326 I'm no expert, and haven't tried myself, but the polyurethane seemed to work...

    Which Honing Guide?

Uh oh! This could get dangerous... Prepare yourself for a deluge, Mark! OK, (deep breath) I'm going to put my head above the parapet, but please note my caveat, this is what works for me! The most important thing is to find what works for you. I bought the Veritas MkII a while ago, and as a...
