Has it really come to this?

I think that's exactly what I said - but now I'm a humourless pedant! I blame the Daily Mail...

Don't get into an insults contest, Roger. It's not very bright... and you'll lose. You just keep believing what you read in the papers. Don't think about anything for yourself...

    Books.

Not really. I mostly read historical fiction.

    Latest design of handplane?

There's a picture of a repro being used here - it looks much as I imagined. If you Google Image search 'Roman Planes' there's loads. Well. a few. And it's page 4 before you find porn! That's almost a record...

    Latest design of handplane?

I got into a long conversation with someone who knew a lot about the history of planes, but it was a few years ago. He said that it wasn't completely unknown, but I can't remember the details. Yes, a bench, but a very different way of working, you must have to stand square on and use both arms...

Very amusing. But if you don't know what the memo actually said, how can you make a judgement on it?

I liked Gorky Park - both book and film. If you want suggestions: Susanna Gregory - Matthew Bartholomew series (14th Century Cambridge), Thomas Chaloner series (1660s London). Bernard Knight - Crowner John series (set in 12th Century Exeter) Earlier - Lindsay Davies - Falco series (AD70...

Has it really come to this?

But we don't know what the memo said - although it sounds a bit strange that this was done as a 'memo' - usually it would be a policy or a guideline. Perhaps this was a reminder to stick to a known rule. If, as seems likely, it was a reminder not to move head and neck-injured victims until they...

    Your best bargain buy.

Record T5 for £30. My wife found it at a boot sale.

    Latest design of handplane?

Has anyone mentioned that a replica's been made? Here Garratt Hack describes the iron version here - looks like York pitch to me.

    Joke

Then why are you asking such a thing? To prove I have no sense of humour, or some such other attempt to denigrate? Ridiculous.

    Books.

I like Bernard Cornwall, but I don't like Sharpe. Does that make sense?

    Latest design of handplane?

Reckoned to be the first plane ever found with a cap iron, if I remember right.
