I think the plane is for scraping all that gunge off his clothes before he puts them in the wash.

    Mackintosh's Tea Rooms

You don`t have Sky by any chance, do you? We often use it to watch programmes which are not broadcast in Scotland, when the BBC, in its wisdom, decides we, in this part of the world, need to see something more relevant to our "cultural differences". It`s really annoying when you see a trailer or...

Advice for a partialy disabled person-please

I would caution against using a glove anywhere near a running lathe. The revolving workpiece could grab and pull your hand in, with potentially dire consequences, far more quickly than you could react to prevent it. Not sure what to advise instead to help overcome your difficulties, but I...

    Saw dust

Unfortunately, "clean and tidy" and "woodturning" are not ideal bedfellows!

    Lilac spoon

I like it. I`ve turned odd bits of lilac but never carved it. What was it like to work - did you carve it "green" or was it dried? Don`t think that particular model would work for a left hander though ; )

    Lathe on suspended floor.

Not something I`ve used, myself, though I did look into it at one time. There is plenty of information to be found online about it. It would be cheap and fairly easy to do, though, and easy enough to reverse if it doesn`t do anything to solve your problem.

    Turning Padauk

It`s not that it`s necessarily any more dusty than other woods, just that, as you suggest, it shows up more! It does mellow to a nice, rich dark brownish red colour though.

    Lathe on suspended floor.

Sand is a good vibration killer. It may help, as an additional measure, if you can add it to the base of the lathe as ballast. Perhaps containing it in a box construction would be possible, or just use sand bags. Also, are the walls solid and if so, would it be feasible to fix the lathe to a...

fingernail bowl gouge and adjustable lamp

You could try Ikea for lights. I`ve bought anglepoise-type and small adjustable LED lights from there, to illuminate my turning. Various styles to choose from and cheap enough to get covered in dust!

    Hardwood suppliers near Edinburgh

There`s also Brodies sawmill and shop at Inver, near Dunkeld. Not exactly local, but just off the A9, so an easy enough drive up from Edinburgh. Ian

Well, I like it! Thanks for the link.

    Riser blocks for a lathe

Maybe your lathe`s design would allow you to slide the headstock to the tail end, remove the tailstock, and rig up a temporary toolrest so you can work off the end of the lathe?

    Reg Slack

I remember him well from my visits to Harrogate. His demonstrations were always so methodical and clear and his explanations so precise. I have an old video of his, from years ago, where the same qualities shone through. A very nice man and an excellent teacher.

    classical guitar strap buttons

Play it resting on your right thigh, folk style, then you won`t need a strap - unless you are planning on standing up to play it. I think Segovia managed OK without one by the way
