    Diagnosing sharpening problems

Many thanks D W. Also, I'm wondering how how different sharpening stone materials impact the final edge. Many of the experts (e.g. David C) seem to use waterstones rather than diamond stones. I've made my choice and already invested in diamond stones, and finances dictate that's what I'll stick...

    Diagnosing sharpening problems

I think my original iron must be jinxed :?: I started sharpening it from scratch. I reground the primary bevel to 25 degrees but using the 'red line' advice from woodbloke66. However, I struggled to get a burr :x . I'm still baffled what I'm doing wrong. To see if I was simply having a...

Premium hand tools - prices slashed

I wondered about this issue, and Bridge City isn't alone in having pricey tools made from aluminium. I reckon Woodpeckers Tools are supposed to be used not collected, but some of them are anodised aluminium. And they aren't cheap!

Premium hand tools - prices slashed

For anyone looking for a bargain during the pandemic, your wait is over; here is the news that Bridge City has slashed its prices. A bench plane can be had for under $600, which is a 40% price reduction. What a bargain! While I'm glad that someone makes high-end tools, I wonder who...

Preventing rust: camellia or 3-in-1 oil?

I switched to ACF50, and it proved significantly better than camellia oil and even 3-in-1. However, I wonder about what these chemicals could do to my skin. Am I being a bit paranoid?

    Diagnosing sharpening problems

I like T10 more than A2, but I know steel choice is very much personal preference. Matthew at Workshop Heaven wrote a bit about Quangsheng T10 irons: Quangsheng are the only volume iron handplane manufacturer to use water hardening carbon steel for their cutting irons. Water hardening steels...

    Diagnosing sharpening problems

Thanks. I think I'm going to try again from scratch, going from with a new 25 degree primary bevel, and see what happens. Many thanks, I hadn't thought about a hand crank grinder but will now look for one.

    Diagnosing sharpening problems

Firstly, many thanks to everyone for all the help and advice. I’m concerned about three issues. I have previously sharpened until l got a burr, but this time I struggled to sharpen enough for a burr to form. (I know about burr removal.) I struggled to get a mirror polish from edge to edge of...

    Diagnosing sharpening problems

I'm hoping for advice about how I can learn to diagnose sharpening problems and ways to improve. I've done a sharpening course and haven't had any problems sharpening until today. Today I was sharpening my No.4 smoother. It's a Quangsheng plane with a T10 iron, and I love using it. Until...

    Spokeshave for hogging off material

Please could anyone recommend a spokeshave that's suited to hogging off material? I'm guessing that I need something with a mouth that's quite open, as well as a flat bottom and a blade that's easy to sharpen. Being easy to adjust wouldn't go amiss too, although I'm happy using light taps for...

Oil for rust inhibition without attracting dust and dirt

I've discovered that PS88 lubricant is invaluable. It was designed as an oil for locks, which means it inhibits rust yet resists dust and grit. I found that many other oils can attract dirt, but PS88 avoids this problem.

    Buying wood during the pandemic?

I found a few books on Amazon, but does anyone know which is easiest to read and use by a beginner?

    Buying wood during the pandemic?

Would anyone be able to recommend a beginner's book about different types of wood for woodwork? I've looked online but only got more confused! I've got some great books on general woodwork, but they don't cover how to choose wood. I need the Dummies Guide to Wood :)

    Buying wood during the pandemic?

Many thanks, I'll see if I can scrounge some mahogany. Is it hard to tell if it's solid or veneer?
