    Forum Users Routers

I have 2 Bosch GKF-600 handheld routers / laminate trimmers. One with a 6mm spindle and the other with 1/4". I have been reasonably happy with these and for softwood (mainly pine), they perform very well. This of course is dependent on the quality of the bits. Paul.

How straight does a straightedge need to be?

This. An aluminium straight edge won't harm planer blades or saw teeth if you accidently bump them. The price is reasonable and you get multi-functionality from the same tool. I have never bought a dedicated straight edge (except for mitutoyo edges for setting up / scraping machine beds). There...

P2 or P3 dust mask filter?

G'day Mick. You will find it slightly harder to breathe with a finer filter, and this will worsen as it gets more blocked by particles. However, it's still easier to breathe with a fine filter than with a cancerous lung  Replace the filters a little more often than large particle sized...

    old pillar drills

Fluff has nailed it. Spend the extra money and if needs be the extra inconvenience of further travel if you see a good pillar drill. Fobco are great and in the grand scheme of things, will likely be kept for life. Like a decent vice, a pillar drill is a pretty important part of the workshop...

    extractor for small shed

Mick, there is the mess you see, and the dust that you can't. I am not personally worried about what comes from the thicknesser as much as what comes from routers, sanders and tools that produce fine dust I can't physically see. The particle size is the deciding factor in wether it is considered...

    extractor for small shed

The reason the hose outlet reduces noise is because of sound-wave destruction that occurs due to the rippled surface. The longer the hose, the less suction you will get though since the motor is working harder to push the air out. You can fix this by having a shorter outlet hose that vents into...

Advice for a drill capable to drill a 100mm hole

Oh, and let me add... don't get stuck on name brands. I have a combination of tools and after a long time working on building sites, I have come to respect certain brands for certain products. This is why my heavier duty drills were always Hitachi. I know you really want a Makita but I would...

Advice for a drill capable to drill a 100mm hole

Oops, let me edit my post. I missed the fact you were drilling with diamond hole saws. That Hitachi will do the job. I have the same drill: http://wanderingaxeman.blogspot.no/2012/07/what-powertools-for-garage-workshop.html and have used it for drilling cement. It is very capable and very...

Mitre saw choice for speaker building

I have done a great deal of finish work on kitchens and also mouldings in renovation projects. I have used the makita LS7014. It uses 7 1/2 inch blades and cuts smooth as glass with a 60 - 72 tooth blade. It also has quite good dust collection and with a shop vac it's superb. It's small and...

    Combi machines or seperate?

Thanks Heimlaga. /00 kilograms is still on the heavy side however if I can leave it against a wall, then there is no need to have it light and easy to move. I have a Lini table saw that is / was made by Ejca as far as I know. I have not found any information on it but would happily have a Lini /...

    Should I buy a £90 pillar drill?

That Fobco is a very sensible option. They were excellent drills and the fact it is single phase means fettling for you. It's old iron and the quality is very high on those drills. Paul.

    Bench drill choice and adaptability

I think this flat spot you mention is to stop the table from just free-falling if the table is not locked after being adjusted. I have seen this on other drills in the past. Paul.

    Small plunge saws

That's correct. I was trying to convey that point but possibly not clear enough. Nearly any circular saw built in the last 20 years or so has the feature where you can adjust the depth of cut. Plunge saws are a very specialized item where I think you could save a bucket of cash and still do what...

    Small plunge saws

For each of the cases you described there are simple and cheap work arounds. In the first example even by using a plunge saw you will run the risk of hitting the saw horse. You can solve the problem by adding a sacrificial top to your saw horses that can be cut into and then replaced when it...

    Musings of a newbie.

I would rather have a doughnut thrown at me than a piece of wood :o My biggest tip for workshop safety... Imagine that every machine and tool is trying to kill you, and they are waiting until you are too tired to fight them off. People make the stupidist and most costly mistakes when they are...
