    Tricks for extracting rusty nails...

    I'm guessing that the time consuming bit of your current method of removal is the digging out around the nail head so you can get a grip on it? If so, have you considered using a core drill to do the digging out bit quickly. This would also facilitate easy installation of a wooden plug once...

    Woodwork design to dispense envelopes?

    How about a simplifed version of this card dealer filled with envelopes instead of playing cards? If you didn't want to go down the Arduino route you could still use the same principle, ie a spring loaded wheel pushing down on a stack of envelopes that gets turned by some manually driven...

    Lidl impact Wrench

    Just checked the Lidl specials archive and they were last on sale in the UK stores on 03/03/2022, selling for £59.99. The prior sale dates in the UK were 28/03/2021, 24/09/2020, 26/09/2019, all at the same price of £59.99 so they seem to only be on offer once a year, most recently in the month...

    Joke Thread II

    I originally posted this in the off topic section under the title 'World's Best Postage Stamp' Not sure why it has now been merged into a joke thread ... it is a real stamp recently issued by the Ukranian government.

    Bargain Alert - Ikea £1 Aluminium Extrusions - DIY MFT Style Clamping

    I didn't bother with the single track as it wasn't as rigid as the three track and both where £1 a length at the time. That's not to say the single wouldn't work as 'T' track, you would just have to embed it / surround it with supporting wood to keep it straight and stop it flexing in a similar...

    Is there any trick to make unscrewing easier from old wood?

    Exactly as Bingy man described ... drill a hole the same size as the outer diameter of the core drill in a piece of scrap to act as a guide to get the hole started and clamp it in the position required. Demonstrated in the video below;

    Is there any trick to make unscrewing easier from old wood?

    I would snap the heads off by applying excessive torque using an impact driver and then trepan around the broken screw with a core drill. A core drill is like a very small diameter hole saw and has a wall thickness which is typically much thinner than that of a plug cutter so you are left with...

    creaky stairs -advice please

    I had the same initial thought before I decided to go down the 'major surgery' route. What changed my mind was the realisation that the risers were only 9mm thick plywood with no mechanical joint securing the riser to the 25mm thick tread. In fact the only thing securing the riser to the tread...

    creaky stairs -advice please

    I sorted my very squeaky stairs a few years back but it involved major surgery ... I removed the plasterboard from the ceiling and a small wall from the cupboard under the stairs so I could get at the underside of the stairs (see demolition pic above). I then made an 'L' shape wooden profile...

    Is there any trick to make unscrewing easier from old wood?

    Whenever I need to get a difficult nail out with minimal damage I usually reach for my Slide Hammer Nail Puller. If you haven't seen or used one before the video below shows it's operation; Once you've driven the jaws in to get a hold of the nail head you can exert a lot of leverage to pull...
