I have a log from a Tree of Heaven and it has some crazy Fungus growing on it some are dyeing the wood Purple and some are Red so I'm thinking of taking a sample to use at a later date or make the dye/stains she has made.

As for getting it right just practice practice practice. I grabbed a piece of scrap and made a tenon/spigot with the jaws sat on the workbench, I just kept testing it in the jaws till it was right then parted that one off and started again.
It might seem a long process but it helped me...

I might get told off for this but I make my dovetails with a skew.
I know you can buy special tools that should cut a perfect dovetail every time so long as you have it straight but I can't afford one.
Celluloid is the stuff they make fake mother of pearl inlays with and they use it to make Guitar picks mostly.
Can't beat an old workshop like that apart from the machines I bet they have been making pens the same way since forever.
