What has caused these vertical marks?

That is unusual, I concur with Paul about possible fissures. That does like like a problematic piece.

All new to me. Just joined today.

Hi Diver - Welcome aboard. Another vote for Record Power and their 5 year guarantee. I took this up late and decided on a RP DML320. It has not missed a beat and has been good to/for me. It is almost at the end of the guarantee now. I believe it is a midi sized machine. I got a deal on a stand...

Thoughts On The Sorby Tool Rest Adjustment Collar

Hi Paul, Thanks for that. I agree that there is no "right" height setting depending on the tool in use. The center/start position is set and I adjust from there. If I had known of your index finger technique beforehand, I might have overlooked this. Before the collar, I still have a sharpie...

Thoughts On The Sorby Tool Rest Adjustment Collar

Having it in place for a couple of weeks and some practice with trees some boxes has been useful. The important part is to get the base height right in the first place. If you get that part right, the half inch up/ down micro ring comes into play and there should be minimal need to use the grub...

    Drive Centre - which type?

I have been using a pair of these for a while now. For smaller work, they are great.

    Live centre question...

The other benefit of a steb drive center is that if you get a catch, the work will stop revolving. Great for learners.

Advice on which lathe to buy

Go for the Herald. It is a robust machine with a lot of options and expandability. It is far superior to your other options.

    New lathe

Have you had a look at what the Hope brothers have to offer? https://hopewoodturning.co.uk/lathes/ks-lathes/?p=1 For a "lifetime" lathe I would want - 1. Swivel head for outrig work. 2. At least 3hp. 3. All the other bells & whistles. Also consider Rikon, Jet and Nova. Good luck.

    Clarke CWL 12D woodworking lathe

That does not look good, the shaft needs replacing and that is not an easy job. It could possibly be that the faceplate is bent, have you run it with this removed?
