Ladders against gutters... And what to do when getting onto a roof ladder?

Fascinating topic with good advice. Thank you. May I extend it a bit? How do people extend their long 2 section ladders? Generally no real problem shoving the 2nd section up to about head height and hooking it onto the 1st section but how do you go higher? I have thought about 'walking' the...

    Car pressure washers

As above... pressure washer alone is not good enough. I use one like this: first spray water over the car to thoroughly wet it. Then use an attachment that allows you to spray shampoo/cleaner etc on the car. Change shampoo attachment for a soft brush and go over car with the brush with water...

Mountfield Manor Rotavator issue advice please.

Hopefully all sorted: My expectation is that it was fuel starvation caused by a partially blocked main jet that feeds the float chamber. I had unscrewed the jet in the central pillar and, I thought, cleaned out the main jet (?? about 3cm long small bore perforated tube that sits under the jet...

Mountfield Manor Rotavator issue advice please.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions. Fuel is new and unit is kept over winter without fuel. No priming pump. Carb stripped as far as I can see is possible. After more searching I have found an exploded diagram of the Manor Rotavator that has parts numbers on it. Yippee. So before I delve further...

Mountfield Manor Rotavator issue advice please.

This is puzzling me and I know it is not necessarily apt for this forum but information is very scarce: I have a Mountfield Manor cultivator, a small model suited to garden and small allotment use. It is about 6 years old. Fitted with a RTSC 100 engine. Symptoms of fault: Engine starts...

    Stuck ball valve

Drip / squirt WD40 around the spindle ... if you can get even a little movement at first then so much the better. I have used this several times and it has never failed ... may take a few minutes or more though. Just move spindle back and forth without excessive force and it should free up...

    Ni Cad drill battery.

I had a similar problem maybe 4 years ago with a Ryobi plus One .. originally came with Nicads but they just failed after a while. I managed to find compatible LiOn batteries on the bay at a good price so just converted to LiOn, buying a new charger as well. As I had 2 drills that took these...

The wrong sort of metric tape

And I learnt many years ago to use the same tape for all measurements. This is because I was shown how different makes of tape can differ in their readings ... not a lot but a few mmm or fractions of an inch over a long length. Cheers, Phil

What to make from oak flooring.

I made some small (approx 18" x 12") tables on 6" round wooden legs to take PC monitors as Xmas presents last year. Excellent. Legs were attached via 6mm threaded inserts. Then made another 3 as small tables to put cat food plates on. Remarkably strong items. Cheers, Phil

How to cut brass discs with woodworking tools

Very interesting thread. As I see it, there are two options: start from round bar and cut discs or start from flat plate and cut through the plate. Each has its pros and cons which I am sure you can appreciate. If using round bar then I think that trying to cut all the way through with a mini...

    Tomatoes

Re copper fungicide, Bordeaux mixture. It certainly used to be sold by garden centres for potato and tomato blight control but I admit I have not looked for it for a couple of years. It can be used on tomatoes but you should remember to wash the tomatoes before eating them. It is a contact...

    Tomatoes

That is late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans ... the fungus that caused the Irish potato famine. The stem lesions you see are very common now and are the stem blight phase of the disease. The disease is called late blight because it normally appears late in the season but does seem to be...

    Question about bike brakes

What you have is a typical Raleigh leisure / commuter bike of that era... model Wayfarer maybe, or Transit? The brakes are perfectly adequate when set up correctly but can be improved by better brake blocks. I suspect the wheels, if original, have steel rims (26" x 1 3/8") so blocks made for...

    Water pistol recommendations

Re: shooting with air rifle. Yes, illegal in these circumstances. And you could fall foul of other airgun laws... If on your own property then if you fire a pellet and it leaves your property then you are committing an offence. Note that even low powered airguns are considered to be firearms. If...
