Applying features with router and indexer.

Hi it's taken a while, but I've finally had a go at emulating some of what Bob showed us here. I'm quite pleased with the results so far: The jig really is pretty simple, and was designed based on the hints Bob posted here. Thanks Bob - a really enjoyable reverse engineering exercise...

    Cherry Tree For Wood Turning

Hi When does it split? During turning, or as it dries out further after turning? I have a cherry few logs, and I am trying to work out how/when to turn them. Is it going to be less susceptible if turned thin?

    willow vase and oak vessel

Yes that's the one. the oak logs I have each have up to 2 dozen similar markings, often grouped at different distances from the center. So far I've turned it all end-grain, and they all look similar to your second picture, all with what looks like the impression of a twiggy branch on the outward...

    willow vase and oak vessel

Hi Here's a couple of things I've done recently. Posting these because I think they are both interesting pieces of wood willow vase. 28cm high x 10 dia. nice ripple pattern in the wood. don't hear much love for willow here - so I almost didn't turn this because I though it would be a...

    How to steam pear?

that's a great bowl Bodrighy! I really like the shape. I had an unidentified blank that had a very similiar colour/grain. Turned beautifully. But very soft - has picked up quite a few dints since I finished it.

    first attempt at offset turning

yep. For the offset feet, I used a screw chuck. I finished the base before hollowing (just a little bit of hand sanding needed) As I said, I hadn't really thought ahead, since I didn't really expect the feet to work. In the end I made some extended jaws for the cole chuck: If was was going...

    holly logs - any good?

hi I got hold of some holly logs - about 3 inches in diameter. how will it turn? should I turn it green? any suggestions on what to turn? I never seem to have much inspiration for spindle turning.

    This weekends efforts

I like the tealight holder (although maybe not the (LED?) tea light in it!) how did you darken the grooves? What is rippled ash? Does that give the tiger stripes down the sides?

    Glue chucks

I tried hot glue for the first time a few weeks ago. Within a few minutes I realized there was no way my puny glue gun was going to get a sufficient bond. So I applied a fair amount, then re-heated it all "gently" with a blow lamp. That gave a rock solid bond (wood to wood). But I'll...

    hardening spalted wood?

finally had a chance to grab a few pics of the bowl in question: CA was mainly used just to harden on the top surface. Some of the areas on the base and sides also has a bit of sawdust filling added.

    first attempt at offset turning

3 footed bowl. I wasn't expecting the feet to work, so I didn't really think through the rest of it until too late. Hence the straight sides. This was originally just going to be an experiment! It's about 6 inches across

    hardening spalted wood?

wow - there's some interesting replies there. thanks. @cornucopia: how long does a pva soaking like that need to dry out? @tekno.mage: yeah - yep, I know too well how CA can darken the wood! "splash it all over" and the problem goes away! @Tam: does the Ronseal product stain? I use...

    hardening spalted wood?

my first post here - hi all! I turned my first piece of spalted wood the other day (beech I think.) I was happy with the end result - but the wood was so spongey (soft enough I could dig out huge chunks with a fingernail) - I had to use vast quantities of zap CA. Was the wood too far gone...
