    Face side

How about a LA sharpened to give an effective cutting angle of 52 deg or use a Stanley no 80.

    Sharpening - I'm sorry!

I use a concrete block, seems to work well and is cheap.

Newbie buying machined timber - unreasonable expectations?

Ahh I see you in the hands of the timber yard then. Perhaps you could ask a local cabinet maker to plane the bits down to size for you.

Newbie buying machined timber - unreasonable expectations?

The only way you can meet those standards is DO IT YOURSELF ! Just think about all the time you have wasted in faffing about sending it back , getting another lot and still wrong. Could have planed up a batch in no time.

    Faithfull Planes

I have several old Record and Stanley block planes which are great, the only new one I have is the Stanley Sweetheart LA block plane and its every bit as good as any high end block plane. it worked straight from the box and after a quick hone took shavings you could see through and on end grain...

Is it normal for a straight edge to be doing this?

I do believe the moon is made of cheese and unless you can let me have a chunk of it to prove me wrong, I wont believe anything else.

If you could teach your younger self ONE thing

Hmmm apart from learning how to get the printer to get those fifty quid notes just right.......................... I always thank my old wood work teacher for learning me to " measure twice and cut once" although I don't always do it and end up using more wood than I should !!!! lol

Is it normal for a straight edge to be doing this?

A straight edge usually is only straight on the vertical plane when the narrow edge is sitting on the wood etc. it sometimes has a slight warp in the side so never use it on the bevel or the side, it wasn't made for use like that. The clue is in the name, straight EDGE.

What a difference a saw makes.....

All my back saws have been purchased off eBay or boot sales, most are over 100 years old and are made like Rolls Royce's, a sharpen and clean up and there are very few modern saws that can match them, those that can are 50 times their cost.

    Paint / Varnish Stripper

I use this, its good strong stuff. Removed many layers of paint and gung from our vintage caravan and that paint had been on there for 60 years. Certainly as good as the old stuff. I cant post a link but search on ebay for Heavy Duty Industrial Strength 5 Litre Paint Stripper 5L Paint Stripper...
