    skew dovetail chisel question

I dont get this argument. If you are sharpening free hand there is no problem to begin with. There is nothing harder about freehanding a skew edge.

    Wooden hand planes suggestions?

Hi, I´ve been making wooden planes for a while now, and have made many different types, almost all of them are the planes that I use all the time. My advice to you is to forget about the batch production and the plan to replace all your metal planes at once. Decide on one model (block plane...

Norton 3X grinding wheel in Europe

Hi Derek, thank you again for your input. I will start looking for a CBN wheel that can be fitted to the shaft of my grinder. I might get back with more questions later on. Best regards, Oskar

Norton 3X grinding wheel in Europe

Thanks for pointing out a few important things. Indeed I´m split between getting the best wheel possible, and just a very coarse and cheap wheel to handle the rough reshaping tasks I´m longing for at the moment. I´m aware of the messiness of truing grinding wheels and this will take place...

Norton 3X grinding wheel in Europe

Thank you Derek! I checked the gear ratio when I got home yesterday, it is at 1:18 giving 1080 rpm when cranking at 1 revolution per second. I guess at normal cranking it is between 1 and 2 cranks a second. Do you know if 1000-2000 rpm is a good working speed for CBN wheels? I have to double...

Hi David, thanks for the tip! I might contact them, when I´ve sorted out if a Norton wheel is what I want. Oskar

Norton 3X grinding wheel in Europe

Derek, thank you for taking the time to answer. And for suggesting something else. Here´s some background on my wheel hunt (I should have written this in the first place). Recently I got my hands on a hand cranked grinder in very decent condition. By googling around the best choice seemed to...

Norton 3X grinding wheel in Europe

Hi, I´m trying to find a reseller of the 6 Inch, Norton 3X coarse grinding wheel, but so far I´ve only located North american sources. Hoping to avoid custom troubles and expenses, does anyone know of a reseller in Europe? Many thanks, Oskar

    Oil stone refurb

I´ve tried the Vaseline filling by heating the stone a little. Not much, just warm to the touch and the Vaseline melts right into the stone. Not even close to fire hazard temperatures.

    Abutment wall thickness

indeed this is my plan. Clean up the sides and don´t worry too much about squareness. Taking it to the extreme, I´ll only need the mouth line, and rough marks for say a 45 degree bed. Then chopping close to these lines. Bedding the iron will take care of the specifics without need for super...

    Abutment wall thickness

Hi David, Now, before cleaning up the blank (which is straight and almost perfectly quartered) it is 5/8 wider than the blade. I hope to true the sides without loosing much, but I guess I´ll loose a mm or so. I also thought about filing the iron a little narrower. At least taper it in width...

    Abutment wall thickness

Thanks for the measurements Derek! I´ve seen your Jack plane build before, nice that this is still your main Jack. I will make a traditionally mortised plane.

    Abutment wall thickness

give it a shot, maybe it works out just fine. What happened to the rest of the plane? The saw cut in front of the escapement Looks very clean, was it not possible to save more of the old Wood?

    Abutment wall thickness

Thanks David. I have no choice but to preserve as much of the billet as possible. I will not get a full 5/8 plus the iron in width. I´m with you on the shrinking, this is the case for my planes as well. Easy to fix though when it happens. I guess I´ll give it a shot. If it does not work...
