I´ve tried the Vaseline filling by heating the stone a little. Not much, just warm to the touch and the Vaseline melts right into the stone. Not even close to fire hazard temperatures.

Hi David, Now, before cleaning up the blank (which is straight and almost perfectly quartered) it is 5/8 wider than the blade. I hope to true the sides without loosing much, but I guess I´ll loose a mm or so. I also thought about filing the iron a little narrower. At least taper it in width...

Thanks David. I have no choice but to preserve as much of the billet as possible. I will not get a full 5/8 plus the iron in width. I´m with you on the shrinking, this is the case for my planes as well. Easy to fix though when it happens. I guess I´ll give it a shot. If it does not work...
