Beech Kitchen worktop as workbench top?

Will do! I’m thinking pocket hole from the frame/apron underneath to be honest.

Beech Kitchen worktop as workbench top?

I’m gonna be building a new 1.5m long bench in the next month or so - just wondering if there’s any reason I shouldn’t use a 3m beech kitchen worktop instead of laminating 12 4x2s. My thinking is cut in half, glue one half on top of the other and I have a solid, flat, 80mm thick workbench top...

How many active turners remain in UKWorkshop ?

I use the skew a fair bit. Raise the rest a little more than you would with a gouge and go in easy. I often use it for shaping the exterior and rims of bowls, always avoiding contact on the tip of the blade. Only time I use the tip is on tenons as it makes a stunning dovetail for the chuck to...

    Game Changing Tools

Game changing tools for me so far. 1) Set of Japanese saws. 2) Pockethole jig. I suspect (and hope) that the bandsaw is going to be game changing but unfortunately, it’s not yet arrived.

How many active turners remain in UKWorkshop ?

Hi I’m a bit of a lurker so not massively active - I turn though. Waiting on my bandsaw to arrive before I start on a blues-bowl guitar.

How many active turners remain in UKWorkshop ?

Hi - I turn but my shed’s a right mess at the moment and I can’t get to my lathe until my 5 year old son and I complete ‘Project Trailer’.

Can feel electricity in my lathe

Hiya. Been getting a few static shocks from my tool rest recently and pretty sure I can ‘feel’ electricity through it. Kinda hard to explain but even when the lathe’s not running there’s a vibration in the tool rest that just ‘feels’ like electricity. The shocks have been really mild; usually...

    Beginner router advice

I use my router quite a bit. It’s also the tool that scares me more than any other. I tend to plan cuts out a lot slower and more carefully than I do with say a jigsaw or circular saw, and I’ll work in passes rather than trying to complete a cut in one pass.

    Trimming hardwood plugs/dowels

Have you seen the little Japanese flush cut saws (Kugihiki)? No outward set on the teeth - so if they cut anywhere near as nicely as my duzuki or kataba saws - oak won’t be a problem.

Gouge sharpening jigs for basic grinders

Cool... I’m actually thinking V-Block as that’s the jig I use for my gouges on the proedge at the club I go to. Attach a flat plate with the t-slot the Sorby table has and I’m laughing (I think!?)

Gouge sharpening jigs for basic grinders

A little addition and I could maybe use the standard gouge and skew jigs from the proedge with this...

    What's under your lathe?

My new lathe is on a workbench I built from fence posts and pallets. I’m pretty strapped for space so my tool boxes are on the shelf underneath. I might add sides, back and front doors to it in the next few weeks to keep the dust/shavings out

Gouge sharpening jigs for basic grinders

Hiya I just ordered a Record RSBG6 Bench Grinder - can anyone recommend a decent (but fairly inexpensive) gouge jig that’ll work with it? Failing that - any plans for an easy DIY gouge jig that I could make myself in an afternoon... There was no way I could afford a Sorby ProEdge or Tormek...
