Great post, agree totally with what you have said that engineering controls should always come first (have a career in filter design also). It has always surprised me more don't put dust control higher on the buying list for new tools, too many other factors seem to come forward before it goes...
As I said, this wasn't a 'project' per se but just a demo at a Festool event hence the timing. Having said that the time over lunch was not very long! When I use dowels I drill and make at the same time.

I got down to these two a well. The twister was a long way away to see / use so went for the Regent which has been great but think either will / would be great for owners I think.I struggled to separate them but went Regent with all the toys in the end.
I went through this of Axi vs RS, I went RS and have never regretted the decision. I like the idea of Tormek jig but have not found the RS wanting in any way in use so that is not relevant to me any more, RS is well built and sooo easy to use. It a class bit of UK kit.
Don't worry about thick workbench top and holdfasts not working, rather than using 'blacksmith' holdfast look at the modern clamp style instead. [or relieve holes from underneath]
