    Pantry WIP

I can relate to Doug 71. I have an attached garage space I am reorganising. I have about 4 crates full of gear on the floor. I take these out on the driveway when I need to carry out any work and then they just go back in! I have done a section of french cleats that now hold my planes, chisels...

    What be this Timber?

Agree with “worn thumbs” it could be meranti! when every man and his dog has made a suggestion, it is from the mahogany family.

    Rounding off Plane Iron Corners

This was a practice primarily for “Smoothing planes and not “Jack planes”. Smoothing planes are generally used for the wider boards, they took an exaggerated, concave shaving and would be easier to sand down afterwards. Whereas the Jack, Edging plane would be truing the edge of a board when the...

    Shed build, many many questions...

For the shed bearers or floor framework, I would use composite timbers say 100 x 50mm section. Therefore, no timber, tantalised or otherwise in contact with the ground block. More expensive at the moment but you will get the longevity. Tantalised timbers are not as good as say 20 years ago!

    Garden bench slats

Just some danish oil I had from turning. Brought up the grain and it looked very clean. Now looks naturally grey. Never oiled them since but looks natural.

    Garden bench slats

Did the same a few years back. Obviously the wood was cheaper then but, it was a little pricey for oak. Painted the steel ends dark green and the oak slats, I just used a soak in oil. Left out in all weather, the slats are self coloured grey but still sound. Basically if you want a bench to...

How did they thickness the boards before the advent of machines

Back at school which is 42 years ago. The woodwork teacher taught me……. Plane face side, test it, mark it. Plane face edge, test it, mark it. Gauge to thickness, plane. Gauge to width, plane. Remember this still for all planing to the correct section. Hard work I must admit no matter how large...

    Lathe rest not smooth

Do you have a magnetic tool holder? Very often these make the tool magnetic also. It may be this that is making it stick? I know I have experienced this.

    Best Source for Blanks?

Bear tricks, you could give a call to Kirk Boulton over at Chapel En Le Frith he is the owner of Exotic Hardwoods. I know it is probably not the timber you are looking for primarily but, he also has a good choice of excellent British hardwoods. They are really stable and many kiln dried. If...

    Cherry blank with woodworm

Dave, a cabinet makers trick used to use or mix the sanding dust from the piece with a pva glue. The pva dries clear and leaves a very similar colour, filled hole. Never used the method on turnig pieces but, you never know. Could always test on a spare piece perhaps first? Dave Mc
