    Worst Cookware

You can also get carbon steel frying pans which are similar to the cast iron in needing to be seasoned with oil. They have the advantage of being much lighter.

    Wrist watch question

The ding in the bezel at approx 9:40 position does look like a significant dent, the metal used must be really soft if that was possible without significant impact. I wouldn't expect that in a gold watch, let alone stainless steel which is a far more typically used material.

    Identification of these tools

Beat me to it. There was an article on Radio 4 yesterday about the lack of horologists. My Dad retired about 15 years ago, he passed on some of his skills to me as I worked for him for half a dozen years. Think he has kept some bushes, reamers, burnishers & oil cup cutters, but most of the...

Running cables behind dot and dab plasterboard?

Yes, there are specialists who do this work. Look for your local Hifi & Audio Visual shop, and ask them for recommendation for installation. They may have people in-house, or association with an installer. One of the options is to use a chasing (& dust extraction!) machine, then install...

    Moving granite worktop

Surely it has to be the outside, so as to offer the support required & transferring any loads from one side of the cut out to the other side. If using wood I would consider channel each side the cross bracing with planks.

    hearing

I understand that people are self conscious about hearing aids, but unless you are some miracle of aging by retirement age or thereabouts you are going to look old. Old people have deteriorating hearing & so it's fairly normal for them to have hearing aids. IE, people expect it and are unlikely...

    Heating thermostat in the hallway

A few months ago I tried to find and employ a heating consultant (not an engineer who was going to install a system), I failed to find one. I am researching this myself now from whatever information (including forum posts!) I can find online.

    Infared heater in garage.

If your garage is next to the house then run central heating pipes into garage & put a couple of radiators in there. Adds a little to heating cost, as lower return temperatures that needs reheating. Works well for me, but garage is attached to house.

sanding turned wood on the lathe

Yew will develop micro cracks from heat far too easily, so you have to be really careful when sanding it. Great advice from Robbo3, start with whatever grit you need, rather than spending ages with a fine grit.

Cleaning old dirty brass clock movement

You don't have to use ultrasonic machine, at the start of his career in the 1960's my dad used thin wooden dowels sharpened to a point. Dismantle movement, insert in to bush & twist round to remove crud. Also (very carefully!!) used wood on pinions. If movement is very dirty, elliptical holes...

    I need help

You are not my long lost twin are you? My lathe timeline is the same. If so, forgo the second Graduate and get a VB36 instead, they compliment a Graduate really well having more capacity & power. Are the Viceroy & current Graduate bowl heads, short bed, or long bed? If the new Graduate is going...

    Optimising hot water schedule

Really interested in these, or similar. Am just researching replacing Combi boiler with a condensing boiler, and any other appropriate upgrades. There are some really useful posts in this thread, I had not realised the differences with condensing boilers & importance of temperature drops across...

"Well, I woke up this mornin'..."

Kind of related, the bank I put up with has an option to view your credit score in their app. Having always been dubious about credit score, I decided to have a look. I am marked DOWN for not having a mortgage (paid off when I was 40). Couldn't believe that these awful credit score things...

How did you learn to turn?

I turned a few things at school when i was 14-15, really enjoyed it, but unfortunately the teacher didnt understand the basics of turning tool sharpening and would not let us regularly sharpen the high carbon steel tools they had. This meant turning with blunt tools, and lots of sanding...

    Lets talk lawn mowers.

Thanks, interesting that seeds will have already fallen, will make a big difference cutting slightly earlier in the year. Really appreciate that comment. The Allen scythe looks great if strimming earlier in the year is still a pain. Cheers, Andy.
