I don't think any colouring pen or ink could be sold if it was poisonous or harmful to anyone .
The amount you'd use colouring a bit of wood would be tiny !
Splinters would be more dangerous .
Thin tube can be made a bit more rounderer by running a suitable sized open ended spanner round it , or use an adjustable spanner wound down to the size it should be .
Buy it planed . I got some 8x2 oak free .
Then spent forever planing it , running it through the bench saw , planing it again .

I got a cheap set of 3 to try carbide tips . Now they're all I use , the easywood ones are nice and the tips last for ages .
The biggest plus for me is NO MORE GRINDING !!!
