    Working Ebony

Hi David, interesting plane project for sure. Given the usual quality of your work, I'm looking forward to see it finished. To my experience ebony stresses tool edges indeed ... but way less than some other exotic timbers do. Take wenge, zebrawood, iroko or bubinga, they eat up tool edges...

    Prototype 'Harlekin'

I think that the tool has enough strength to stand hard use as long as it will be treated how a good tool should be treated. Look some early saws like Groves & Sons, Kenyons and others more. They show that a filigrane shape is able to stand the use for 150+ years. Actually these early British...

    Prototype 'Harlekin'

Many thanks to all posters! I've a tiled floor in my shop. If a handle drops down it almost always will get impacts regardless the wood or the shape. But the rather brittle Ebony is more vulnerable than e.g. beech or some fruit woods, no doubt. This particular design seems to be more fragile...

    Prototype 'Harlekin'

The rather dark Ebony hides the details while being photographed with the usual exposure. Here a few slightly overexposed pics. You probably will spot some nicks and nacks. I was smart enough to drop this handle onto the floor when it was nearly finished. It was seriously damaged :( ...

    Prototype 'Harlekin'

A sash saw with a new designed handle. It was a test to give it a more TLT touch. More filigrane and offering a way to insert an ovally shaped spine flush to the top of the cheeks. Pedder isn't too fond of it, he called the design 'Harlekin'. I had a good laugh on this name but found it rather...

    Paring chisel thickness

My paring chisels have the thickness of 4 mm, one has 3.5 mm. While I agree with Derek that it's the length of the chisel that gives some more cutting control, the thin blade is important to me as well. It allows to put the power to the very edge of the tool without the risk of digging in. Klaus

German silver, stainless steel and ebony

Thank you, Gasman. Pedder and I make saws on a very small base. It's a very little side business with a low number of saws per year. But each and every saw is bespoke to the customers handsize and to his wishes. So our saws while looking equal at the first glance are rather unique. We make...

German silver, stainless steel and ebony

Hi BugBear, Pedder and I are very happy, that this saw will be owned by a true craftsman who certainly will give it an extensive use. That's what it was made for 8) Klaus

German silver, stainless steel and ebony

Hey Mike, hope to find someone. Wouldn't like to retire from sawmaking... Klaus

German silver, stainless steel and ebony

Thanks a lot for all these appreciated comments, Gentlemen! We are working with rather dark Gaboon ebony. But it still shows grain and some brown figure. To get the black deep, the handle gets one layer of blue pigmented poppy oil before the sanding work will be finished. We show it here (just...

German silver, stainless steel and ebony

Hi folks, we've made a fine joinery saw that is different to our usual ones. It has a spine of German silver instead of brass. The steelish colour of this alloy goes well with the SS screws and with the ebony handle as we find. The downside is the difficult slotting of this alloy. Our machinist...

Poll Time - Success with Planes or Chisels You've Made

Hi David, I've made 5 planes so far. Ok, 3 of those have been infill kits from Ron Brese and from Gerd Fritsche, both other ones have been made of scratch. 3 of those are my absolute go-to-ones for sure (2 kits, 1 scratch). Both other ones still are good planes. There was another attempt to...
