    Folding solid shutters

It has actually been less difficult to make than I thought. I'm very much a beginner and have been able to make them and they work. The trickiest bits were: - working out the overlaps etc to get them looking the same size when open and closed - workin out the exact hinge position so they...

    Folding solid shutters

The idea is to have two tiers. Then the bottom can be closed for privacy while keeping light (mostly for any confidential work) or one top part shut when the sun is low and too bright to see the PC monitor.

    Folding solid shutters

There will eventually be a top tier too I just haven't made them yet. I started this tier in September so not exactly progressing fast. We wanted tier on tier so we could shut only the top when the sun is low in the winter.

    Folding solid shutters

When I previously mentioned my folding shutters project in another thread someone expressed an interest. So here they are part done. This is my first major woodworking project, so has been a real learning experience. Hand tools only, though I did get the pieces planed to width and thickness by...

    Restoring wood floor

Awesome, thanks. I've got sugar soap somewhere. I'll try another test patch and see how it goes.

Oh yes, but it's mostly sound enough.

    Repairs to butcher's block

We've agreed a £200 refund (so about 50%) to settle things. That should be enough to leave some cash to eventually improve it plus I don't feel like I've hugely overpaid when I look at it now. It's a bit rough, but I think I'll file that under "rustic" until I have time for it. Thanks for all...

    Restoring wood floor

I've got a Victorian pine tongue and groove floor. It's got years of grime and paint etc. on top what I presume was a fairly original dark stain. A basic stripper like Home Strip paint and varnish remover seems to take off the grime, paint and some stain with a bit of wire wool. Before I order...

    Repairs to butcher's block

True. Though at this point I'm getting so irritated *not* having a decent height cutting space (especially after waiting 5 months for this) I'm not sure I want to wait many months more for someone else to find time to make one!

    Repairs to butcher's block

Yes, two-tier folding shutters. I'll post in the projects section once I have something worth showing. It's taken a lot to design them (including help from this forum and some very old joinery books) but I think I'm on track. Bottom four panels are made (though they're very simple as I'm very...

    Repairs to butcher's block

Thanks TheTiddles. We needed something a custom size, and all the photos of previous work looked nice, so that's why I paid without having seen it. Haven't returned it yet because the maker was away over Christmas and has now offered a discount. I'm used to paying at least something up front...

    Repairs to butcher's block

Ah, well now you are all encouraging me to keep it and gradually make improvements instead of trying to send it back! I think I may do that. I'm quite disappointed it took so long and arrived in the state it did, but realistically I'm not going to have time to make my own soon as my current...

    Which Dehumidifier?

We have a Meaco that's been great. My brother bought the same model just before us and his packed in after a few months. And the replacement died even quicker. I guess it might be a quality control thing?

    Repairs to butcher's block

Thanks for all your comments guys! For some reason I didn't get notifications of anything past the last time I posted and it's been a busy Christmas and New Year so I hadn't realised there were any more comments. That gap is by far the worst bit. The frame I know isn't very exciting, but I was...
