Holdfast - what have you got?

+ 1 the Sjoberg ST03 holdfasts. I have a pair that have been in regular use for a good number of years. They are very effective and no noisy banging! John

    Axminster price increases

I bought a 16oz bottle of Titebond Extend last week from Axminster. It was about £9.50 plus carriage so only a bit dearer than a few years ago. John

    Tambour cabinet

Hi Gasman, All the best with this very elegant project. Good furniture making subjects are fairly uncommon here now, particularly in the past year where the Joke and General Off Topic sections are taking up a huge amount of space - previously they were only occasionly seen. John

    Maximum wardrobe door height

For me this has been the most interesting woodworking subject for over a year. More like this and I'll start joining in again. John

    Spokeshaves

    Moisture meter advice

Any of the cheaper pin type metres are OK for giving you an approximate figure. If you are planning to use the timber for something in the house, then check the moisture on a few pieces of your own furniture - this is the figure you should aim for. John

    What cost for European Ash

Northern Redwood is in the 'softwood' classification but is slow growing and fairly closed grained so suitable for your substructure. John

    What cost for European Ash

Is there a particular reason for using Ash? Northern Redwood might be a better option. John

    Astronomy Binoculars or small Telescope

A telescope with angled eye piece on a decent tripod is the best way for serious star gazing . You can lock onto a subject or traverse the sky with ease without any shaking or neck pain. This is difficult to achieve with binoculars. The downside to the telescope option is the cost which will...

Does oiling both faces really make a difference?

I do both sides - why not, it only takes a few minutes. John

    Excel

I use Exel to keep a record of my world bird species and sub species seen. It has about 32,000 lines and is produced by Cornell University. Cornell update it every August with the latest scientific findings. Not sure how many columns are available. John

I haven't seen Andy post for a while. I value his knowledge hugely. I hope he is OK. John
