A little truth for a change.

V interesting post, though I'm not a fan of being labelled a 'Greta loving enthusiast' just because I think that we might be on the verge of a climate shift that will be bad for our children, and might be preventable. I have been a scientist, and know many, and the struggle to fund research is...

Are EV's good value? Apparently not!

Totally agree! I’ve always been a car nerd and chosen a car that’s faster and more expensive to run than it needs to be to suit my needs. Last three cars were a V8 M3 (my third V8 bmw), a Discovery and now a Tesla P100D. The Tesla is faster than any other large family car I could have...

Are EV's good value? Apparently not!

Maybe it's been said already, but I just want to respond to the comments about why manufacturers targeted premium products (fast, posh cars) before the mainstream (shopping cars). That's normal practice, and Elon Musk explained it in describing Tesla's product plan - you create demand by...

Advice on potential purchase of a workshop

It sounds to me like you have more money and less time than some who are just starting out, and what you really want is to try your hand at this furniture business lark without spending a year faffing about building out your workspace, or going to work for someone else. I can see why a turnkey...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

That's lovely. But is it oak? Aren't the tannins a problem with oak utensils?

    How good are Howdens kitchens?

Don’t have much to add, have found Howdens OK (and easy to open a self-build account) but in the mid range I prefer IKEA for the thing that the trades hate - the lack of a rear service void. I’ve never had huge kitchens so the extra storage volume (10-15%) more than offsets any fitting...

Notes on Scottish Wood @ Oakley

They have handsaws behind the counter in the showroom which they keep for customers to use. As well as mon-thu they are open the first Sat of every month 9-2. They are a great bunch of people who do a lot for the community and for forestry and sawmilling in Scotland.

Why do we get such a limited choice of planers/machines in the UK?

All I can say is I hope you learned your lesson :D

Table Saw kickback and trimmed finger (Graphic description & images)

My neighbour has the Festool sawstop but I’ve not seen it in use - he prefers his Hammer slider. I’ll ask him about it. Re high blade when ripping - I also find this logically safer provided it's guarded - the overhead crown guard on my wadkin PP makes the guard height genuinely independent of...

    AI chair?

This is quite an interesting application actually. There are many ‘reasoning tests’ , the most interesting of which might be asking an AI in which order to stack a bunch of physical objects (GPT4 can do it). Asking for a design with cut list could be a good one for the new multimodal models.

Planing a board flat - Is there literally no light when testing with a straight edge?

This! I’m slowly getting better at hand planing, but most of the time if the stock is flat it’s quicker to just stick the nice blade in the saw. Or just use the plane for cleaning up the sawn edge as mentioned above.

Fail - Equilateral triangle with 50/50 mitres

Some thoughts 1 Is there any flex in your slider + fence? I’ve found that setups like that can flex a bit under load because the slide is relatively far from the blade. Could you locate your jig in the T slot? 2. Could you joint/shoot the ends with a sharp hand plane? Just fitting one of...

Bathroom drawers design question - avoid water inside

I've never seen it done but maybe you could still have flush drawer fronts but with chamfered/sloped top edges, or a lip. We have the same need - no plumbing mods in the world can overcome a child's appetite for chaos!

The joys of electric car ownership!

Yeah I wondered about trains! Globally they are mostly diesel. A quick search suggests UK rail miles are 30% pure diesel and 30% pure electric - unclear what the others are. It would be great to see more sailing vessels (I have my own so I'm biased). The main point remains though that there...

The joys of electric car ownership!

I guess it depends on your definition of 'most'. Seems to me that all continuous- or near-continuous-duty ICE applications are incompatible with current batteries. It's hard (in the 30sec I alloted to the task!) to figure out how much of the UK's GHG emissions are due to continuous-duty ICE...
