    Planer thicknesses buying guide

What do you want to achieve with your planer thicknesser ? If you want long boards reliably flat and square, I achieve that consistently with an Axminster AC250PT which costs a little over £800. If you want the surface smooth enough to require no further work, you will need to spend more ...

    Phillips bits

I use torx mainly for bicycles etc - small, delicate jobs where I need fine control when I am tightening a bolt. I can’t really see the need in woodwork / construction where Posi works perfectly well. The problem is usually that someone spends a lot of money on a project, then buys cheap...

Have I killed my cheap PERFORMANCE POWER pressure washer ?

Have you tried just leaving it to cool, then having another go ? I bought a very cheap pressure washer from B&Q years ago. If I run it as you describe without water flowing, it quickly overheats and shuts down. A few minutes rest and it is good to go again. On the other hand, cost saving...

    Rooting hormone poweder

I did a trial last year with dozens of plant cuttings, half with “natural” rooting powders, and half with nothing added. The powders made no difference at all to rooting or subsequent growth. I won’t use them again.

It’s an alley around here, but just down the road on the border with East Sussex it is called a twitten.

    A little thread of calm?

What are you going to do with your Bordeaux mix if your plants aren’t getting it - drink it ? It might be a good cure for coronavirus. In answer to Droogs - definitely not too late to start sowing things. You can sow herbs and salad vegetables from now up to June or July. If you are short of...

    A little thread of calm?

I make my own Bordeaux mix now the shops have stopped selling it. Equal parts of copper sulphate and slaked lime, both easily and legally available via the Internet. I don’t grow potatoes any more, but it is a magic cure for peach leaf curl. I think it is banned because long-term heavy use (...

    Learning dovetail joint

I used to enjoy reading the varied contributions to this forum. Even Jacob, for all his quirks, was often entertaining and sometimes had something useful to say. Now you have managed to get rid of him, a small number of regular contributors are competing to take over the position of chief...

    Electric vehicles

Economics isn’t that simple. Leasing costs depend on how much value the vehicle loses over the period of the lease. The initial cost of an EV is far higher than an equivalent ICE. If a three year old EV still attracts a big premium over a three year old ICE, the leasing costs may not be...

Choosing a scroll-saw. Why pay more? the answer is here.

I have an AC 456SS and I agree with your comments about it .... but changing blades is slow and fiddly. It is much easier now I leave the side panel off, but I still find it frustrating. If possible, I suggest you try before you buy. On the other hand, it may be much the same for all cheap...

PSE vs regularised wood for desk top

Don’t buy from B&Q, their wood is definitely not furniture grade and is not even particularly cheap.

Help delta 16 scroll saw problem bad misalignment first time

I’m clamping it down but just seems pretty hard work to cut. Obviously my inexperience but il get there. Just had to mega over correct which seemed a bit wild even when taking my time.. I bought my first scroll saw a few months ago and had a few “mega correction” moments at the beginning. I...

    Working with English Yew

Well there were one or two acerbic comments, but I thought the general tone has been encouraging, while pointing out some possible pitfalls. Some new forum members ( not accusing you Riot ! ) will ask for advice on a project even though they have already decided how to do it, then argue...

    oil/Arkansas stones

I’m glad you have explained what IPA is. I was wondering why anyone would waste good India Pale Ale on a sharpening stone.
