    Oiling Meranti

Thank you, What do you think of finishing with Tru Oil? My only concern with varnish is that knife edges will be contacting the surface on a regular basis, and I thought that varnish was brittle.

    Oiling Meranti

Hi All, I'm about to finish a meranti magnetic knife rack, and was planning on finishing it in linseed oil. Since it is an open grained wood (I think), do I need to fill it, and what grit should I sand to? Thanks in advance, Hugo

    Magnetic Knife Rack

Thanks, that's really helpful. I think I'll go with these ones: http://www.first4magnets.com/rectangular-magnets-c35/75-x-10-x-3-mm-thick-n42-neodymium-magnet-6kg-pull-p3664#ps_1-2969 as they offer the same amount of pull as the ones detailed in the thread you linked, but are cheaper per cm of...

    Magnetic Knife Rack

Thanks, Since these magnets aren't cheap, I really don't want to have to buy them twice. I reckon that in order to create good coverage, the magnets will have to sit end to end for the length of the block (500mm, although I'll probably add a bit to that on either side for mounting). I'm...

    Magnetic Knife Rack

Hi all, I'm making a knife rack for a friend's birthday, and was wondering what magnets to use. I want to strike the right balance between the magnets being strong enough to hold the knives in place, but not so strong that it wrenches knives out of the users hand. Furthermore, there's the issue...

Cheap, second-hand, green, French (maybe?) pillar drill.

Hi all, I've been seriously noticing the lack of a drill press in my workshop during my guitar build. I came across this recently: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bench-Pillar-French-Collectable-Electric-240-Drill-Excellent-Condition-/130990756633?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item1e7fa85319...

Dust extraction for a tiny workshop.

There's a lot of dust because I've been routing MDF (for templates). With regards to chip collection, I'm thinking of purchasing a shroud for my Hitachi M12VE, which I could then attach to the extractor. Are there any downsides to the NVD750, or the CamVac as allround machines? Can they do...

Dust extraction for a tiny workshop.

Oh, and I dug out my 2011 Axminster Catalogue, and it has a small information guide, giving dust extractors the following ratings: 1 - Chippings only 2 - Chippings and sawdust (with fine filter option fitted) 3 - Chippings, sawdust and sanding dust 4 - Chippings, sawdust, sanding dust and MDF...

Dust extraction for a tiny workshop.

Does anybody have any experience with the CamVacs, or the Numatic NVD750? They look like very versatile setups, and they'd just about squeeze into my shop. Also, since both the Numatic and the CamVac have multiple filters (the CamVac has 3), could I use them without a separater, and not have to...

Dust extraction for a tiny workshop.

At the moment, the only tool I have that spews out a lot of wood is the router, but I plan to get a bandsaw and a tablesaw in the next year or two, and a planer/thicknesser after that.

Dust extraction for a tiny workshop.

It looks like a good option, but I don't think that it would actually fit in my workshop! I think that until I get a bigger shop, I'm going to have to go with a vacuum style extraction system. What do reckon to be the best system in that class? The Numatic? CamVac? I see that Axminster currently...

A workshop run like a GYM

That's a great idea. There are Hackspaces: http://hackspace.org.uk/view/Main_Page dotted around the country, and I visited the Hackney branch once. However, it was more electronics based, with few working metalworking facilities, and even fewer wood tools. If something like that sprung up near...

Dust extraction for a tiny workshop.

I'm in the midst of my first guitar build, and the saw dust is flying. Almost every surface is covered in a good millimetre or two of dust, and the floor rustles with chips and shavings. I also use a twin cartridge dust mask whenever I'm in the workshop, even if I'm just getting something. I'd...

Solid Polishing Compounds with Foam Buffing Pads

I'm fairly sure that Menzerna solid compounds are used by luthiers: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Finishing_s ... ounds.html I just liked the low prices of the solid compounds over the liquid ones, since the solid bars can be bought in small quantities. If they could be used with foam pads, that...
