Hello does anyone have a supplier for maple throughout plywood (not maple veneered poplar)
I've been experimenting with best materials for my project and love the paleness of maple & it's great to work with. I prefer the visible stripes of plywood that are revealed when it's turned over the...
Thanks for the
Thanks for this suggestion. I spoke to someone at Scott & Sargeant this morning and they advised PCD bit would be more suited to harder materials. The Poplar is very soft and carbide should be ideal - like @Ollie78 they suggested an up / down compression bit for the cleanest cut...
Thanks for this Ollie I've tried running a separate finish pass with a downcut bit to take off a last 0.8mm and whilst it is a better finish the straight bit alone it still isn't completely smooth enough to be able to skip the sanding and jump straight to waxing. I'll try running a separate...
Thanks Ollie & sorry for the super delayed reply.
Yes similarly mine is cutting at around 2.5metres a minute feed rate with spindle speed 18k rpm. I've been using 6mm straight bit as I don't need the bottom face to cut cleanly and I'm a bit nervous of using a compression bit on this thick 25mm...
Thanks for this & sorry I've not replied sooner
I'm going to test out some solid beech / maple but I'm quite attached to the look of the poplar ply for it's paleness & when i lathe the back i like how you get all the visible rings. There's pics above on the thread to show this as i know it's...
Thanks for this, never heard of Valchromat, looks interesting! I'm using lots of very specific paint colours to make 'bouquets' so think the colour range would be too limited for this particular project but will look into it more!
Sorry I know it's hard to imagine what I mean by domed backs on...
Sorry for the very delayed reply, this was a good shout thanks for your suggestion... I've bought in some birch ply to compare and i can get this to v-carve and cut cleanly on the machine with zero sanding. So much faster. Aesthetically though i much prefer the pale uniform look of the poplar...
thanks the top edge is clean - varnish on the top surface helps a lot with that. The fuzzies are in patches on the sides i think where the bit ends up cutting with the grain direction. Also get some in the V carve details which i can only get clean enough by spraying with sanding sealer and re...
Thanks for this, yes fuzzies are from the router... I've tried lots of iterations tweaking feeds / speeds and different router bits but with the poplar whatever i try it still requires some hand finishing. Someone told me Poplar is notorious for tear out etc on the cnc? Frustrating because I...
Thanks for this I'm not familiar with furniture board are they a solid wood panel not a veneer? I've never worked with either beech or maple, i'll try and get some samples to see how it cuts on the CNC!
Hello,
I'm new to woodworking, having invested in a hobbyist CNC machine last year to try and get an idea off the ground. So far I've worked solely with 24mm thick Birch Ply & Poplar Ply but I'm wondering if there might be a more suitable material if anyone could suggest what may work well for...
Thanks Ollie yes they look interesting! The sanding holder is a great shout - I'll definitely experiment with that, may be able to hold a stack of the smaller pieces to speed things up.
I'd love to get the cut super clean on the CNC - it's all relatively new to me it's a kit build machine i got...
